Metz Press Release
The next generation of a successful model
Photokina innovation 2010: mecablitz 50 AF-1 digital
The mecablitz 50 AF-1 digital is the new generation of the 48 AF-1 digital, winner of the TIPA Award for “best photographic accessory 2008”. All the benefits of the previous model have been retained and numerous further developments have also been added. The elegant housing can be mounted onto the camera flash shoe via the new metal base and fixed in place quickly and easily with a single movement thanks to the optimised lock system. The guide number has been increased to 50/ for ISO 100/21° and 105 mm focal length. Performance and reliability have been further optimised through improvements to the high performance flash tube. Moreover, the flash has been equipped with a servo flash release via the camera’s internal flash which also works independently of the camera’s master function. Even the wide-angle diffuser has been adapted and is now even suitable for illumination of wide-angle focal lengths from 12 mm (135 format). Like all mecablitz system flash units, the new flash unit is available in different versions, perfectly tailored to digital cameras made by the leading manufacturers.
Numerous application possibilities
With the new mecablitz 50 AF-1, the options for image composition are almost limitless. It allows precise light output tailored to each individual subject. Numerous manual fine tuning options extend creative photographic freedom. Virtually limitless possibilities are opened up for individualised lighting thanks to a fully swivelling reflector system which also contains a flip-out reflector card and a diffuser. The slave function and the new servo function allow the new premium flash unit to be used without constraints in two different operating modes, depending on the camera model. With the servo flash release, no camera master function is required to use the flash as an additional creative light source in the room. The camera-specific wireless TTL remote mode of the respective models comes into play with the slave function.
High performance compact flash with USB connection
Thanks to the Metz mecablitz 50 AF-1 digital USB interface, updates can be easily installed via the Internet. Due to its high guide number 50 for ISO 100/21° und 105 mm focal length, the 50 AF-1 digital is not just high performance but also lends itself perfectly to being used as an indirect flash. The real highlight – a flip-out reflector card, which is integrated into the both vertically and horizontally tilting and swivelling reflector.
Different versions for Canon, Nikon/Fujifilm, Olympus/Panasonic/Leica, Pentax and Sony
It goes without saying that the respective camera manufacturer’s sophisticated flash lighting technology can also be employed with the appropriate version of the mecablitz 50 AF-1 digital, in addition to numerous special functions, such as high speed synchronisation. Therefore, the 50 AF-1 digital offers E-TTL and E-TTL II flash mode for Canon – iTTL/D-TTL/3D flash mode for Nikon/Fujifilm – P-TTL for Pentax and four thirds TTL mode for Olympus/Panasonic/Leica.

I have purchased & used Metz 50 AF-1 flash with Nikon D3000 DSLR camera.I am satisfied with the performance.
Need to read the instruction manual and program it according Your requirement. I have been using Metz 60CT-1 & 45CL-1 for years satisfactorily. Hope the 50AF-1 also perform like the older brothers.
AF Assist beam is bit insufficient for slow kit lens in the dark. Apart from that I have no complains as a first time user of Auto focus camera and TTL flash. I recommend the Metz 50AF-1.

I have the 50 AF-1 Nikon and SB-800
the 50 AF-1 is excellent. more power to the shooter. high speed sync, bounce card, everything is there.
The light is better than the SB-800. And I mean better with the same camera and the same zoom at all the focals. Bouncing 90 degrees to the ceiling (same ceiling and same position) the metz gets the job done with a better diffusion.
I am impressed.
the only thing that I can't stand is that idiotic two-button selection: I never get it right and when I do the setting of the previous function may be changed by mistake so I stay with the doubt and I have to do it all over again with that hit and miss two-action idiotic procedure ... so it never ends.
It reminds me of the other idiotic two-button action of the canon 1D/1Ds to change the ISO. same thing.
But don't they pay poeple to test the stuff and report back? I don't get it.. do they test the stuff or just play with it????
beside that it works great.

Had to send my Metz 50 AF-1 back to the retailer. I put batteries in it, powered it up, and when I tripped the flash, there was a VERY LOUD pop. After that, all the functions seemed to work on the flash--except the actual flash. Bad capacitor I guess. Has this happened to anyone else?

Michael : I had to exchange the first one because it made noises when charging. Noticed immediately and ran back to the store to return it. The second unit is silent and works well. For sure this is NOT a flash that you buy used with no warranty. The QC seems in line with all the other third party flashes (vivitar, yongnuo, sakar ecc...): which means cheap components assembled to save on costs.
Metz is not as it used to be with this 50 AF-1.
Hopefully your replacement unit will work well.

I acquired the 50 AF-1 last week from B&H Photo. It came without any user manual, and I need to acquire one. Can anyone help? B&H is unable to do so.
Many thanks

Mark - The PDF is fine. Your shared link is what I needed. I had scoured the Metz site and missed the button for manuals. Thank you!
