Microsoft Digital Image Suite 9
Microsoft are continuing their quest for world domination by announcing Microsoft® Digital Image Suite 9, which the software giant claims is “the first digital imaging software package on the market to combine all the tools consumers want and need to organize, archive, edit and share the soaring number of digital photos accumulating on their PCs.” I wasn’t aware that there had been 8 previous releases of the Digital Image Suite - if anyone has been using them then please let me know what you think of the software.
Microsoft Digital Image Suite 9 is available for an estimated retail price of $129 (U.S.).

Perhaps they see it as part of the same product family as Media Player, which is currently at version 9.

So were there 8 versions prior to this one? Or is this a completely new product? Hhhmmmm...

There would not have been 8 prior versions. It is also unlikely that the product is completely new. I probably contains some tools that have been around before, along with some new ones. The version numbers that Microsoft uses in no way reflect how many prior versions there have been of a product.

Basically, this is Picture It! with a new name. In the last version of Picture It! they tacked on "Digital Image Pro," so it was called "Microsoft Picture It! Digital Image Pro 7." So it looks like they skipped version 8, dropped "Picture It!" from the name, added an image organizer, and called it a suite. It makes perect (Microsoft) sense! ha! I have a review of the last version at http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/imageediting/gr/digitalimagepro.htm
I put it in the hobbyist category.

Thanks for the clarification Sue. Are you going to be reviewing the new version anytime soon?

I avoid use of the word "soon" but, yes, I'll try to get my hands on a copy for review.

Sorry If This Is Off Topic!
I have said this on other forums and will say again here. One day Microsoft will come out with it's own digital cameras line. Eventually their PDAs will have to camera's like Sony and Palm does. Then the next step will be cameras that are tied to work with their software like this new product. People might laught but they did get into the mouse, keyboard and now the wireless game.

I've just ordered my copy of version 9.0 having been a user of version 7.0 (and, Picture It! beforehand) for some time. I must be honest and say that using DIP 7.0 was not MY choice in the first instance and, as an avid Photoshop user, I, at first, found the program somewhat 'limited' but, having now 'got to grips' with it, I have to say that, overall, I was/am VERY impressed (it's printing capabilities in particular are some of the best I have seen (and MUCH better than Photoshop's).
The new version promises a LOT more functionality with more fliters, templates, etc., (and you can use most '3rd party' plug-in's too (include many Photoshop ones), a good 'image organiser' and, for me at least, a really essential BATCH processing suite (resize, interpolate, change format, etc.,).
The old (7.0) was very good (but not perfect). I can only hope that Microsoft have made the 'right improvements' and that one of DIP's MAIN features; it's ease of use; has not been compromised!
I'll let you know more once I've had a chance to 'play' with version 9.0!
