The situation in Australia seems ludicrous and I only hope it does not spread to this country. Although I have read the National Trust gets touchy about commercial photography at the property it owns. Does this include natural property as well such as coastlines and countryside? It might not be so long before NT, English Heritage, etc start insisting on fees for photographing natural features. And then private landowners will follow suite once they sniff a way of generating additional income.
I hope this does not occur in the UK, but it is a possibilty.

I think that photography inside National Trust property is definitely off-limits, especially if you have a camera that looks "professional" in any way.
British Rail already ban photography inside their stations without written permission. Earlier in the year I attempted to take some photographs at Liverpool Street Station in London, but was only allowed to do so after signing a statement saying that I wouldn't use the images for commercial gain!
