New Olympus E-System DSLR at Photokina
Olympus have released a Macromedia Flash-based teaser advert on their e-System website which hints VERY STRONGLY at a new e-System camera, to be launched at Photokina at the end of September. Billed as “The next generation of digital SLR cameras”, I would guess that Olympus have a more affordable e-System SLR body than the current professional E-1 up their corporate sleeves.

In all fairness, the E-1 only has an expensive reputation because at introduction, it was overpriced. Currently, an E-1 with 14-54 (28-108 equiv) lens will set you back GBP1250. Try getting a Canon or Nikon with _quality_ lenses to cover an equivalent range for that kind of money!

Olympus has always said that the E 1 would be followed by a consumer model and a top spec pro model. I am a Canon and Contax user but chose the E 1 as my first digital camera for the quality of the image at a realistic price. Perhaps they will be showing two new models at the end of the month?

This new "prosumer" model should be competitvely priced with the Canon 300D and the Nikon D70. It leaves me wishing that Olympus has a firmware update in the works to activate the CCD to provide 8 MP instead of the current 5. The CCD has 20 MP's worth available but they're not in use, probably because their software is so slow. It would hardly make sense to offer another "prosumer" camera with more pixels than a professional model.
I love my E-1, and it feels as great or better than the other Olympus cameras I've had since the OM-1N, so I hope that Olympus brings more to love.
