New Printers from Epson?
It looks like Epson are set to announce a new range of photo printers very soon. The Japanese website I Love Epson has details of the Epson PX-G900, Epson PX-G800, Epson PX-G700 and Epson PX-V600 printers, along with a slick Flash presentation for the PX-G900. There are also 2 new ink systems mentioned - PX G Ink and PX V Ink. My Japanese is a bit rusty, so for now I’ll leave you to look at the photo of the Epson PX-G900 printer. Obviously there’s no details about price or availability yet…

Here is a translation through Babelfish of the PX G Ink text:
“Glossy efficiency raised with the densification of the resin which wraps around the pigment ink. Furthermore, the highlight part and the like, adopting グロスオプティマイザ which is placed in the place where the ink is little originally. With the print surface as uniform, diffused reflection of light is held down, the beautiful glossy impression is actualized. In addition, because グロスオプティマイザ shows also the function which becomes fixed the pigment securely, it can print normally clearly even with the paper.
* Technology of new pigment PX-G ink
High glossy conversion of the pigment ink was actualized the new ink technology where the Epson PX ink technology evolved, with the densification of the resin which the pigment coating has been done and the adoption of グロスオプティマイザ.”
It sounds like Epson may have solved the “pigment ink with glossy paper” issue that has been a problem with the Epson Stylus Photo 2200/2100 printer.

Looks like Epson are responding to the Canon 960 series and now the HP 9760 with it's excellent B&W mode.
The Epson range (1290/2100/etc) is a bit old now so due for a major revamp.
Hopefully the new Epsons will have better print longevity, seperate colour (cheaper?) ink cartridges, good B&W, and be faster.
Looks like I should hold off buying that HP7960 until details of the new Epsons are available.

I'd definitely wait for a couple of weeks to see what Epson announce for the rest of the world. Annoyingly none of the new printers that I've reported are A3 size :-(

Sean, you should hold off that 7960 in any case. I am returning mine tomorrow, the B&W prints have a strong blue to purple cast. It's not obvious when you look at them by themselves, but obvious when you compare to true silver B&W prints, or even chromogenic B&W prints on color paper.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could buy a few printers from one store, make a few test prints, keep the printer that you liked, then take the others back?!!
I've heard of a few other issues with the HP 7960 printer, including the pizza-wheel effect, which leaves noticeable indentations in the paper when a print is made.

Look at the bright side, Mark. Blind people finally have an affordable braille printer...

I'm sure that's not the market that HP were aiming for!
According to Vincent over at Photo-i, the pizza-wheel effect should only last for about 6 prints, whilst the new printer is bedding-in. Some people, however, have reported that the effect can be seen on a lot more than 6 prints...
