Nikon D300 Picture Controls Update
Nikon have released an update for the Nikon D300 DSLR camera which provides Nikon D2X Picture Controls. This is a set of three optional Picture Controls, one for each of the three D2X/D2XS Color mode settings. When these optional Picture Controls are registered with the D300, color reproduction simulating that of images captured with the D2X and D2XS is possible.
Custom Picture Controls can also be created based on these optional Picture Controls. For black-and-white images, use the standard Monochrome Nikon Picture Control.
D2XMODE1
This optional Picture Control simulates color reproduction at a D2X/D2XS Color mode setting of I.
Skin tones and gradations are reproduced naturally with rich reproduction of tones.
D2XMODE2
This optional Picture Control simulates color reproduction at a D2X/D2XS Color mode setting of II.
This optional Picture Control is suited to images that will be extensively processed or retouched.
D2XMODE3
This optional Picture Control simulates color reproduction at a D2X/D2XS Color mode setting of III.
Choose for nature or landscape shots. Greens and blues are vividly reproduced.
*To achieve a level of brightness similar to that of images captured with the D2X/D2XS, set Picture Control Brightness to -1. Color reproduction precisely the same as that achieved with D2X/D2XS Color mode settings I, II, and III is not guaranteed with the three D2XMODE1, D2XMODE2, and D2XMODE3 optional Picture Controls.
*D2XMODE1-3 optional Picture Controls must be registered with the camera before custom Picture Controls, based on D2XMODE1-3, can be created using Capture NX or ViewNX and registered with the camera.

FYI - It's not a firmware upgrade - it's a set of profiles that can be loaded into the camera.

While this makes the D300 a better back-up camera to the D2X, it makes me think that it is only a matter of time before the D3X comes out. When you consider the pricing difference, the D300 is simply too close in capabilities to justify the greater expense of a D2XS.

I keep seeing this update through Nikone Europe. I'm in the USA; is to use it for my camera? I purchased my D300 at Christmas of 2007. Thanks for any replies.

Nola, you can get exactly the same file from Nikon USA (see http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=14457&p_sid=xlDn2vTi for instance). The three Picture Control files should work on any D300 camera, regardless of its origin.
