It's pretty good for an entry level DSLR that's for sure. It's missing some features but it is an entry level camera so it's all good...
The mono audio recording and no mic input is a downer for me :(
@Jon nikon fanboy, better than a T2i/550D? Erm no it's not lol

@Yianni yes it might be better than T2i, the only good thing about it is the movie/video mode, now this camera has the same thing so i think it's comparable.....

Yianni ,
dude, it's an ENTRY level camera, man. It's the kind of camera you would buy for somebody who have never used more than a full-auto compact! Sheesh.
Plus, MONO audio is better than stereo in this instance - you don't want that all-tinny voice sounds from fake stereo sounds when you're trying to edit a movie with sound effects later, you don't want all that background noise anyways. One-direction mono is better if you're trying to shoot a simple movie.

Yianni did actually write that it is an ENTRY level camera.
Do you even bother to read all of other people's posts?

Then why not just leave out the bit about the MISSING features? It's an ENTRY LEVEL camera! It's NOT going to have all the features of a $3500 priced DSLR, or even a VIDEO camera, for that matter! Sheesh! These people!

@GT, Did you read all of my post? I said it's an ENTRY level DSLR two times.
I wouldn't have cared if it had mono audio paired to crap VGA video. Nikon have gone all out and offered the best in HD video at 1080 24fps yet paired it with mono audio. This is my gripe.
As for mono being better I disagree. I've got stereo audio on my compacts and when compared to mono audio from older compacts the stereo murders it for clarity and quality in every environment.
Obviously they left it out because it's an entry level model which I pointed out but it's still a shame recording 1080p HD video with mono audio.
As for taking cheap shots at someone online, that's not cool. I'm sure you would shut your mouth and not say a word if you were having a discussion with Mark face to face. I guess yelling at someone over the internet is easier, right?
Back on topic... It will be interesting to see Canon's response to the D3100.
Cheers

Yanni, the sound quality as such is not directly linked to the audio being mono or stereo. I'm ok with mono sound, but the sampling rate of 24 kHz is really disappointing, that is what causes tinny sound like an old telephone. I may buy this one anyway, there is always the option of recording sound separately when filming.

I am far more anxious to see Nikons own response to the specs of this D3100 when they come out with an upgraded D90 and D700, hopefully in the not too distant future.

It's a pretty sad day when on an apolitical photography website people have to get crude and use disrespectful language about another person.

Might be helpful if several of you stepped back, took a deep breath, attempted to mature a bit, then begin posting again. As for camera comments, I think it's great for the marketplace to watch equipment manufacturers produce remarkable products for us to buy. What an amazing change in just a few short years for camera enthusiasts. I'll probably never go much beyond entry level DSLR's because it's just not that important to me. I took a Nikon D40 with a good zoom lens on a 3+ week trip to India last year and came home with some wonderful images. I'm contemplating replacing it before another India trip next February, so I'm following these new cameras to decide whether it's worth doing. Thanks to those who made worthwhile comments.

I You people take yourself way too serious; this is a hobby for most of us, especially those of us who would consider a Nikon D3100. This blog about this camera should be light snd loose, instead of so serious that the vulgar language comes out at the slightest perceived slight. I suggest that the monitor of this site just take those people involved in this off the air (so to speak) for a couple of months while they have their mouths washed out with the appropriate soap.
