Nikon D40 Review at ePhotoZine
ePhotoZine have published their review of the new Nikon D40 entry level DSLR camera.
“Despite the numbering, which is more likely a spoiler for Canon’s 10D, 20D, 30D sequence, this camera is an improvement on the D50 which it is set to replace. Aggressively aimed at those not happy with response times from digital compacts and bridge cameras, as well as film shooters who want an economic route into digital and first time family snappers, the camera majors on ease of use.”

Well what a surprise, Nikons D40 is light and really small even compared with the D50. Fitted my hands, fast handling, I might even buy one! Only worry is my legacy Nikon lenses, retailer training (LCE) didn't include any detail on backwards compatability, "its got a different new mount", "Bring a manual lens in and you can try it" really doesn't inspire, but thats not Nikons fault. The price is though, US retail $599 equates to just over £300, UK retail is £449 thats $880! Scale of economy is their excuse, BS!

The compactness and great LED screen will be attractive to the younger set, those with needs for using lenses from our collections, and tradition adjustments may be better off buying a used full-featured Nikon, IMHO.
But, also consider that IF lens compatibility is the only hold-back, manual focusing isn't that much of a problem, in fact, there are lottsa arguments in favor of precision focusing when done manual. I find that when I consider using a Nikon lens on my Canons, I dont even consider the inconvience, and, maybe, just maybe get a higher percentage of good shots from being in manual.
Bring your favorite lens that uses the body-motor to focus, and try it, panning around and manually focusing, you may find it to be OK... that small body and big, sharp screen sure looks nice...IMHO

Well in the end I went for the D50, the slightly larger body actually handles better for me. My trade contact confirmed the D40 will not work AF wise except with the latest DX lenses, so most of the legacy AF lenses won't work! All my MF lenses on the D50 work fine (except the pre-Ai 1:1.4 50mm which won't even mount), though the small viewfinder takes a little getting used to.
And as the D50 is now old hat the price was right too!

Well, the old pre-AI manual lens will mount on the D40. Try them, and shoot!
