Nikon’s Profits Rise

Mark Goldstein | Digital SLR Cameras | February 8, 2005 | 1 Comments

Nikon D70Strong demand for the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR (pictured) saw Nikon post a profit of £30.2 million in the three months to December 31, reports the Scottish newspaper Edinburgh Evening News (found via CameraTown).

“Last year, managing director Makoto Kimura said Nikon was increasing production capacity for the D70, with a view to eventually halting production of film-dependent compact cameras for which demand is sliding. He said Nikon aimed to sell one million digital SLRs in the business year to March 2005, compared to about 300,000 in 2003/4.”

The D70 has saved Nikon (recently aquired by the Mitsubishi Group) from losing face with Nikonians everywhere, however I have seen many Hard-core Nikon users entertain and take action to switch to Canon. I await the highly delayed release of the Nikon D2X and actual photo results. I am anxious to strip a D2X down to see the quality of the shutter and mirror cage assembly to see if it can match the excellent shutter cycle specifications of the 16 Megapixel Canon. ( I have been repairing Canons and Nikons for over 25 years. Nikon Technical Services won't make a statement on the shutter cycle capability of this camera. Canon and Olympus openly advertise the durability of their top Pro camera releases.
Nikon needs to revisit it's roots and step up to the professional plate with solid specifications similar to their Nikon F series cameras which made Nikon famous during the quickly vanishing "film era".
Until then, I remain a Nikon user, very happy with printing an awesome 30" x 20" from my inexpensive D70. I think I'll by another one!
