Noktor HyperPrime 50mm f0.95
The Noktor HyperPrime 50mm f0.95 portrait lens for Micro Four Thirds, which we wrote about last week, has officially been announced and priced. Constructed of eight elements in seven groups, the Noktor HyperPrime 50mm f0.95 offers the same angle of view (23°) and depth of field as a theoretical 100mm f1.9 lens would when mounted to a 35mm film camera. Weighing in at 480 grams, the Noktor HyperPrime 50mm f0.95 takes 62mm filters and focuses down to 0.6m / 2ft. This manual-focus lens for Micro Four Thirds ships from 15 April priced at $750, and is available now for pre-order.

The extremely shallow depth of field of this lens makes it somewhat useful for cameras shooting video, but for stills - I doubt it. Especially in an era when cameras can shoot with an ISO as high as 100,400 lenses this bright have very little use (IMHO, of course)...

I must disagree with Rob above. Shallow depth of field is a wonderful technique for portraits, and is used in fashion photography constantly.
Among the thousands of portraits I've shot many of the very best were done using my beloved Zeiss 100mm/F2, one of the acknowledged greatest portrait lenses ever. Others were taken with the legendary Nikor 105/2.5., another fast 100mm prime.
If the Noktor can come close to the performance of these lenses wide-open it will be a very well liked lens by many shooters.
