Fujifilm has posted three full-resolution sample photos taken with the new Fujifilm Finepix F300EXR, a compact camera that mates a 24-360mm equivalent zoom lens to Fuji’s new generation EXR sensor. The sample shots were all taken at ISO 100, and include a still life, a portrait and a landscape photograph.

I think the F300EXR is a step back. It has a smaller sensor than its predecessor, the F200EXR.

Hell, these diagonal sizes aren't even the real size, which is another issue:
F300EXR: 1/2" (0.5") sensor is actually 0.315" .
F200EXR: 1/1.6" (0.625") sensor is actually 0.38" .

So in reality - the sensors in compact P&S are smaller than advertised, making them even more unworthy of our hard-earned money.

A very promising camera. The new autofocus technology sounds like a breakthrough development !

(Perhaps Fuji can accompany this great technology with an image sensor providing better image quality next time !!! The iso 100 reference images look already somewhat painterly.)

I'm totally underwhelmed by these images. Very disappointed.

Not only the sensor is smaller vs the F200EXR but also the 15x zoom seems to me a too great ratio .
Hopefully the pro-mode (backgound our of focus) work better than the F7OEXR (in this camera was ridicolous)

The better way is to hold the camera and see the "real" results.

Fujifilm should focus bring us a decent Camera with HS10 features and manual large zooms plus F300 technology. The sensor have to be large with minimal 12 megapixel EXR. HS10 is total disappointment on all images at almost all occasion.
S200EXR has an excellent images but the camera always lag in many way. I think Fujifilm is running out of steam and going to lose many potential customers.

I found this camera a big disappointment. Went to a camera store checking this it out. And guess what!...Scratches on the lens. Almost dead center of the lens. Second one has dust in side the lens.(what a joke!) Third one had more scratches on the lens, again. I decide not to buy it. Fuji need to pay more attentions in their QC. I don't know if they find cheaper labor in CHINA(Made in China). They sure produce cheap quality. Good Bye Fuji.

When I first purchased this camera I began shooting pictures indoors because I always arrived home from work during the late evening. This is a terrible way to start since like most compacts shooting indoors is not one of its strong points. However I did manage to get a few nice low-light pictures by using the pro low-light mode. Many of these pictures printed very well even at 8x10 and also the pro low-light ones!

At first I didn't give this camera a chance because I was too busy reading reviews. I felt that those reviews were discouraging and immediately started looking for another camera. I tested the Sony DSC WX5 and the DSC H55 which were both very good cameras with better IQ in terms of noise. They only offered better indoor pictures without fussing with the settings, but like I mentioned you can achieve nice indoor pictures with the F300.

In this camera's defense getting pretty decent quality pictures is quite simple when you begin to explore it's features and what they all mean. FYI I never use auto mode for anything as I have observed that it locks down too many options. A clear understanding of the cameras limitations can also help you achieve your picture taking goals.

So up to this point I would have to give this camera good review with indoor IQ being a minor negative for me. Indoor picture taking can be corrected well enough for me to find them acceptable. Everything else about this camera is ideal for my needs as I have accepted its limitations.

FYI if you look at Fuji's firmware webpage you'll notice that the F200 EXR had a number of firmware updates to improve an already great camera, so maybe they'll do the same with the F300.

Regards,
James

Like the F80 I own, all Fuji cameras out of the box are not set up optimally. You will need to tweak the settings slightly to get the best out of the camera. e.g. the default iso setting is 400 or 800. This should be reduced to 200 or 400 as a general rule to get sharper noise free photos.

EXR mode works well if you prefer a point and shoot camera. Note there are 3 options in this. Choose the one that best represents your needs. A few test photos may be required.

I have taken absolutely amazing near darkness photos with maximum zoom, but you will need to play around with the settings to achieve this with the Pro low light mode option.

In uncertain circumstances - where the light may or may not need a flash there is an option which takes one photo with flash and one without. This allows you to pick the best photo of the two. This is a wonderful option and saves a lot of tinkering with settings.

With low light photos bear in mind that you will need to be very still (best by leaning on something) or using a tripod.
