Online Print Services Review Updated

Mark Goldstein | PhotographyBLOG | September 12, 2003 | 2 Comments

Colab LogoI’ve updated my Online Print Services Review with a new contender. I’ve taken a look today at Colab, who charge just £0.12 for a 6x4 inch print. Find out whether the quality matched up to the price and if Peak Imaging and Photobox have anything to worry about…

Online Print Services Review - Part 8 - Colab

As a reminder, in this 8 part Review, I’ve taken a look at some online print services that operate in the United Kingdom and let you know what I think about the service and print quality that I received from each one.

Hi Mark, I think you need to check the online print review feature - I can't get through to the picture comparisons...

Thta's because they've not been posted yet... grin I will be posting a new one every day all this week, starting with Photobox today.

OK, Mark - in that case the angle bracketed pointer to a non-existent page is very confusing smile

Point taken - I'll remove it for the rest of the review.

Anyway, what do make of the PhotoBox review? I was pretty impressed overall and may use them again for larger sized prints. Especially as they offer "discounts for quantities of the same print size", so that I could get 20 9 x 6" prints made for only 95p each (and they don't all have to be of the same photograph).

PhotoBox look good. I think I will try them myself.

I will also be interested to see how your Epson printer measures up. With prices and service like this it questions whether you actually need your own high quality printer at home. On a cost basis anyway.

Sean, I'll be posting the same photos printed on my Espon later in the week, after I've added all of the online print service reviews.

Photobox are the best I have tried so far. Which is why I have made http://www.dp-now.com an affiliate partner. You can also pre-pay for extra discouts on 6x4s and there is a zip file upload option (did you mention that in you review?).

Having your own printer is not necessarily about saving money, but being in control of your creativity. Do what you want, when you want - flexibility and immediacy.

I didn't mention the zip file upload option as I only submitted four images. I tried to stick with the most common means of submission and the standard prices for each of the print services tested.

Another good point that I saw mentioned elsewhere on a photography forum was the issue of continuity. Even if you find a good lab, they may change their machinery, personnel, settings etc without you knowing. Once you've got your inkjet setup and calibrated, you can rely on it to churn out identical prints for as long as the life of the printer.
