Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC1 Review at CNET

Mark Goldstein | Digital Compact Cameras | March 26, 2005 | 3 Comments

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC1CNET have posted a review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC1, a rangefinder-like digital camera which is exactly the same as the Leica Digilux 2 in terms of camera design.

” The 5-megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC1 is the somewhat cheaper (by roughly $250) sister to Leica’s Digilux 2. The LC1’s appearance and exterior finish are slightly different than the Leica’s, but the two cameras share the same extensive feature set; decent performance, and unique, efficient, analog-inspired design. But despite its somewhat lower price, the Lumix LC1, as with the Digilux 2, will have a tough time competing with cheaper digital SLR alternatives for the enthusiast’s dollar.”

Hmm, yes I love the presence of the Lumix LC1 or Leica Digilux 2 in the marketplace. The price is serious however if Panasonic +/Leica upgraded I'd buy it. I would be prepared to fork out the cash on a 'Digilux 3' or 'Lumix LC2' on the basis they add/enhance with the following:

8 MP (5MP is in ultra compacts now)
640 video (with above, use the lens!)
Better buffer
ISO 50
Improve viewfinder in low-light.

Given that we are entering Q4 2005 (and the PRICE) the technology is already in the market in similar product lines). This should not be an overhaul/redesign etc, just a component upgrade and performance tweak - I want a sensor, a buffer and sensitivity to match the beautiful and capable lens - come on guys, make it happen.

I must be a weird guy! I shoot for some "County" magazines in the UK: members of the aristocracy and Royals, and have gone backwards regarding pixels. I usually shoot on a Nikon D100 but have using my LC1 more.
Full page and double page spreads have been bright, sharp and tonally great.
It must be the larger than usuall chip used on the LC1. More pixels doesn't mean perfection!
