Panasonic LX2 / FZ50 Petition
Disgruntled owner Pavel Kudrys has started an online petition about the new 10 megapixel Panasonic LX2 and FZ50 digital cameras.
“The main aim of this petition is to “force” the Panasonic to release a firmware update for their very recent prosumer cameras FZ50 and LX2. This new firmware should allow the users to turn the in-camera Noise Reduction (and other picture adjustments, like contrast, saturation and sharpness) completely OFF. The current option to set the picture adjustments to LOW is not enough, because the VENUS III NR is simply too strong and kills many fine details and gives the JPEG output very smudgy and watercolor paint look.”
So far 160 people have agreed with Pavel and signed the petition. We’re in the middle of reviewing the DMC-FZ50 at the moment, so expect our comments on this “issue” soon…

Noise Reduction: Strong/Medium/Low/OFF should be available in all cameras... So I'll support this one

Two days later we have 320 petitioners and the numbers increase!

Thanks to all who signed up this petition! The petition is now mentioned also on Hungarian pixinfo.com web and it's really visible on the number of petitioners form Hungary
It would be nice if also other digital camera webs add a note about this petition in their NEWS sections (Japanese webs would especially be nice). Anyone from Japan reads this?

There are many other complains which cannot be mentionned into a single petition such as
" Please get rid of the so many useless features like movie mode, sun mode, moon mode, cloud mode, storm mode, wind mode, rain mode.... but place a true RAW mode and a real viewfinder, I mean we need just plain strict, simple and useful photo modes & features."

Support for this one is really something, addressing the noise is MOST important, and giving US the option is , well, wonderful!
We ALL have likes and dislikes, pet-peeves, so to speak, mine is the unadjustable "Sepia" mode. That selection has to be eliminated, or be given some settings.. best gone, Photoshop does a good job in "Styles" and using combinations/fading/adjusting layers.
This "noise" petition, if acted upon by Panasonic, would be the greatest boost for their reputation that could ever happen! Just think about it, a huge company that actually cares about photographers, and actually demonstrating that concern!
There is no greater boost in a company's stocks than public confidence.

So guys, just yesterday we turned over 500 petitioners (actually, it's now 540+) and the numbers increase faster now! Yesterday we also suffered a temporary page-down due to a gopetition.com server upgrade. But now we are back online and as I hope, we will soon attack the magic number of "1000" petitioners

Quick update! Up to now collected 900+ petitioners. It seems, we will soon (tomorrow or so) turn over the 1000 signers! Not bad for 15 days of running this small petition, what you think?
Leica now released their rebadged versions of LX2/FZ50 so we will see if the noise reduction and other image processing is less or more the same as in the original Panasonic cameras and if the same, I'm ready to extend this petition also to Leica equivalents of LX2/FZ50.

First 1000 signatures done! Hope the Panasonic will listen the voice of customers
It's sooo easy for them to add such a small feature into the firmware and get undying respect from their customers...

A couple of years ago I bought a CanonPowershot PRO1 into which I installed a Canon firmware update to improve its performance. It did.
Now, I'm looking to get an LX2 so sincerely hope the good folk at Panasonic 'see the light' - 'scuse pun and get this firmware WRITTEN SOON.

So guys, first month of running this petition is very close! Up to now, we collected 1336 signatures and as I hope, we will get close to 1500 before 2nd October

The number of collected signatures is maybe not so impressive in comparison to all sold LX2/FZ50 cameras. But we have to bear in mind that not all digital camera buyers surfing the net and reading digital camera forums! So in my humble opinion, 1300+ signed people for one month of running this petition is very solid and representative number of customers.
Panasonic, please, listen the opinion of your loyal customers! What you can lost giving this little request a go and giving the Panasonic enthusiast what they really want?

Just a quick update..
But at least we tried something. Wise marketing could easily turn this petition into their favor.
After first month of running this little petition we collected over 1500 signatures (exactly 1570 for now) and the numbers still increasing. Sure, it's small number in comparison to all sold Lumix cameras. But it's solid proof of something wrong with default in-camera noise reduction, or at least a proof that some "pro" users simply need better control over in-camera NR. Check the people's comments in their signatures.
Unfortunately, we don't have any reaction from Panasonic yet. But it can have two reasons.. Panasonic simply playing dead horse, or most probably, the petition is running too short for an official reaction from Panasonic's side. Who knows? Maybe if we collect few more thousand of signatures, Panasonic will finally take us seriously? Or maybe not..

Sorry, but Panasonic are on vacation after having gone to the bank and realize how much money they had made by joining forces with Leica.

I have refrained from upgrading from my FZ20 to the FZ50 purely because of the latter's too-agressive noise reduction. With petitions like this going on, I'll wait some more and see if there's a positive response from Panasonic.

So, have any of you guys had any luck with petition at all?
Has anyone heard anything from Panasonic? Any response?
Or are we all just going to have to wait for a new version of LX to come out some time this autumn?

No luck guys. Panasonic apparently ignoring us. I've tried send details about petition to several emails I found, no answer yet. The last thing I'm going to try is to print out all signatures and sent them by mail to Matsushita CEO. But I don't think it will have an impact.

I guess I'll wait for the LX3.
I am sure it will be much improved, again.

You can bet the main "IMPROVEMENT" in LX3 will be 12Mpix chip and even worse problem with noise and noise reduction. Remember my words and return back when they release LX3!

Ronald, I'm afraid there is no LX3 just yet
If Panasonic follow their past announcement patterns, then it should be with us in the summer of 2007.

I've been waiting 6 months to upgrade my fuji finepix to the LX3. I didn't get the LX2 because of the noise.
If the LX3 doesn't address the noise issue, I have a fuji camera in mind that is "less" of a camera than the LX2 but has excellent noise reduction, which I can use for my natural lighting indoor shots.
I will miss the 16:9 aspect ratio though.
Please don't go to 12 Megapixels - although I would be glad to see a larger sensor!

I can say that everywhere on the web people are asking for better IQ which means, larger sensors, maximum 10 Mpix, wider DR, better colours, NO noise AT ALL, maximum 1600 ISO.
It also means better lenses and on this Pana isn't at fault.
Instead the photo industry is doing the exact opposite, they move away from their market no matter what they think or read from lousy market studies.
The first one who is able to ear it will strike the jackpot, what are they waiting for ? I am puzzled !!

"I didn't get the LX2 because of the noise."
What noise? You mean the problem with "over-suppression of noise" right? That the images are getting over-smoothed, lacking in detail?
