Panasonic TZ1 Photos
Here are the sample photos from my upcoming review of the new 5 megapixel Panasonic TZ1, a few days before the full review is online. The Panasonic TZ1 is a compact digital camera with an amazing 10x optical zoom lens equivalent to 35mm-350mm on a 35mm film camera, optical image stabilisation and a 2.5 inch LCD screen.

I was impressed with the seemingly low image noise of these photos
until I realized that all the photos I examined were at ISO 80. I didn't
check them all, but are there any at higher ISOs?
And what is with photo 1? The only explanation is that the TZ1 has a
Purple Fringe "Enhancement" mode, which must have been engaged
inadvertently.
I eagerly await the full review, as I had high hopes for this camera.

Panasonic is the first manufacturer to incorporate the highly useful High Angle Mode to a digital still camera LCD, making it easy to view when holding the camera up high to take pictures over a crowd, for example. With the help of the Power LCD function, which boosts the backlighting of the LCD by 40%, even shooting in bright outdoor situations is no longer a problem.

The TZ1 has a 207K high resolution, 2.5” large LCD. The pixel-mixed read out method performed by the CCD automatically increases the brightness level of the live image on the LCD, which greatly facilitates low-light shooting.

Travellers further benefit from the useful ‘Travel Date Setting’ which, once you have preset the date of your departure, records and displays the images in chronological order of your trip. The ‘World Time Setting’ is also useful as it allows you to set the time and date of 74 locations across the world.

Mark, when you review the TZ1, could you please resolve the issue
as to why it has a 6 megapixel sensor but only puts out 5 megapixel
images? I have yet to see a good explanation for that. Thanks.

Gary, to my knowledge this camera has a GROSS MP of 6.2. The actual EFFECTIVE MP is only 5.0. The other 1.2 MP is sacraficed somehow during the capture. No one has given me a clear explanation for this either.

Barring a typo, my theory is that, in order to fit a 10x zoom lens into
such a compact body, its lens elements had to be made so small that
its image circle was not large enough to cover the entire 1/2.5" CCD.
