A few weeks ago the annual Pearly Kings and Queens’ Harvest Festival was held at St Martins-in-the-Fields Church in Trafalgar Square, London. I spent a completely mad 30 minutes dashing around the very confined and very contrasty area outside the church; it was a sunny day and there were deep shadows and very bright highlights. Not that great for flattering portraits! Still, I managed to get a few good shots of this very British institution before they headed inside the church for the service.

A request, Mark? The pictures you post are great, but your audience is world-wide. It might be a very British institution, but we're not. How about a short description of these events and festivals you're showing us. I'd be interested in knowing something about the name. And what's with the wild costumes? Is it a religious thing, or...what? Not a complaint, just a suggestion...

Pics are wonderful, as usual! The hat on #7 makes the whole costume.

My apologies Ed! Despite being English, I don't know too much about this myself, just that it's a London tradition. Here's a helpful link:

Great looking people photos. But I think they are not a colorful as other photos I have seen of yours before. Maybe it was because of a bright day that washed out some of the color.

It was around 2pm on a very, very, very bright day at the end of September. I agree that the pics are not as colourful as usual, and I also agree that the conditions were to blame! I was also testing out my new flash gun. I may convert some of them to black and white to see what they're like - I think quite a few of my images would be much better in black and white. I just need to find some time to try it out...
