At Photokina, Pentax is showing off its brand new K-5 digital SLR camera alongside the recently announced K-r and the company’s medium-format offering, the Pentax 645D. Also on display is the older Pentax K-x, which is available in a dozen different colours. The company is not neglecting its compact camera range either, the various Optio models are being showcased just as prominently as the manufacturer’s SLR cameras. The highly customisable Pentax Optio RS1000 has been given extra attention, with an eye-catching display of its own. Those of you who plan on attending the show in the coming days will find the Pentax stand in Hall 2.2, just behind Nikon’s exhibition area.

The 645D really make me slurp.
But looking at some sample pictures I guess that the D3X gives the same quality (sensor being only 15% bigger on th pentax)

Amien the D3X does not come close to the details, I have a Canon 5DII (very similar to the D3X) and was lucky enough to get my hands on a 645D while visiting Japan. After comparing the two shots side by side the 645D is way way cleaner and sharper. If you get the chance to shoot one go for it. (just be prepared to lust after it like I am, especially for the price point).

Thanks for the input. I compared myself the 5DII to the D3X & the latest provided much crispier & detailed shots vs the 21MP body. AA filter weaker on the latest ?
This is the blog of a recent 645D shooter :

The night shots look fantastic in terms of details & clartity. The dynamic range is very good as well.

Hi Amien,

Sorry, the sensor is only 15% bigger on the Pentax?!?

It's nearly TWICE the size! The 645D sensor is 1,452 sq mm and the D3X sensor is 864 sq mm.

The Pentax 645 is a break through for price tag, the sensor is the same sensor as in the Leica S2.
For 9000 euro you will have an excellent 645 camera with a cropfactor of 1.3.

But the sensor is nearly twice the size of 24x36
the Pentax comes with a correct 55mm standard lens, Leica comes with a 70mm lens (good for portraits) but it not a standard lens

Anyway Pentax is a good competitor in this market
