British press photographer Simon Taylor has submitted a petition to Downing Street 10 to remove new restrictions on photography in the United Kingdom. Section 76 of the Counter Terrorism Act, introduced on February 16, makes it an offence to “elicit, publish or communicate information” relating to members of the Armed Forces, police and intelligence services if that information is “likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism”. Those convicted under Section 76 could face a fine or up to 10 years’ imprisonment. The petition submitted by Taylor states that “We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Remove new restrictions on photography in public places.” If you are a British citizen or resident, and agree with the petitioner’s aims, you can sign up at the following URL:

I wasn't aware that law was on the books over there but that is crazy... I get enough hassles over here in the U.S. about taking photos, but to make a criminal out of a photographer that is supposed to interpret the intentions of how someone else might use a photo? CRAZY.

There is no law on restricting photogrsaphy in public places. The only problem is the bad interpretation of the law by police officers and PCSO on the ground. They really don't understand that unless you can prove a terrorist link to the picture is there even a potential case.

Again, there is no law in the UK to stop anyone taking pictures of anyone or anything in a public place.

The petition in question is being laughed at by photographers in the UK because similar petitions have been raised before and when you read them there is no relationship between the wording of said petition and the law.
