Photo Management Software
I’m currently looking for a photo cataloging/management software package, as my library of images from the last few years is starting to become unmangeable. For example, I don’t actually know how many images I’ve taken and kept!
I’ve seen a lot of posts on various photography forums asking for opinions on this software application or that one, so it struck me that a comparitive review of a few packages would be a good idea. So far I’ve downloaded and started using IMatch, Jasc Paint Shop Pro Abum and Picasa.
If you have any suggestions for possible contenders, please email and let me know or leave a comment on this post.

Have you thought about Portfolio Extensis or Photoshop Photo Album? The Photoshop program is supposed to be available mid February. I use Extensis Portfolio. BTW, thanks for the email regarding your site.

Hi Dawn!
I couldn't find a beta version of Photoshop Photo Album on the Adobe site, so I may review that at a later date.
Is Extensis Portfolio a MAC program? When I went to download it, the platform was listed as MacOS...

There is both a Mac & Windows version. The Window's version is 5.0 only while the Mac version is available as 6.0.

Mark, I downloaded and paid for Picasa. It took me all of 15 minutes to make up my mind this was the program for me.
The price had something to do with it, but I like being able to hide directories, and to rotate pictures at will.

Hi Sue,
I think you've hit upon a good idea here...
If everyone could leave a comment saying which program they use and a brief description of why they chose it (as Sue has done), then I will incorporate the feedback into my comparison.
Thanks,
Mark

You may also wish to check out Canto Cumulus (http://www.Canto.com/). Like photoshop it has a steep learning curve, but it's also extremely powerful, and has several companys that have created additional "Add-on" products.
You may also wish to check out "Controlled Vocabulary" a website that I've been building (http://www.ControlledVocabulary.com/). I've worked hard to develop an "agnostic" system of managing images. The heart of this concept is using the IPTC fields built into Photoshop and Corel Photopaint as a means of storing all the "meta-data" for each image. This way you can easily switch databases with no problems, as all the critical image data travels with the image.

Thanks for the suggestion David - I'm downloading the trial version of Canto right now
I think IMatch uses the IPTC system as well (or gives you the option) - this is the software that I'm currently considering.

I've got the demo of imatch on my desktop, but haven't had a chance to take a look yet. I've heard good things about this app, including the ability to "push" IPTC data back into the file. Not sure which formats that is for, but would imagine TIF and Jpeg are covered. BTW, Canto offers this option as well, and it's cross platform to boot. That means you can distribute a CD that mac or windows users can read without having to install the software on their computer.

Mark, does Photoshop Photo Album RAW plugin support the 10D?

I don't think Adobe RAW does officially support the 10D, as it was released before the camera.
I've heard rumours that Adobe RAW may be part of Photoshop 8, which may be released in Nov/Dec of this year, and it will probably add support for the 10D.
