PhotographyBLOG Review: Fuji FinePix S3000 Zoom

April 26, 2004 | Mark Goldstein | PhotographyBLOG | 16 Comments |

Fuji FinePix S3000 ZoomThe Fuji FinePix S3000 Zoom is a very stylish and affordable update of the FinePix S304 Zoom. It has a 3 megapixel sensor, like most other digital cameras at the entry-level end of the market, but it stands out from the crowd due to its 6x optical zoom, which is equivalent to 38?228mm on a 35mm camera. The Fuji FinePix S3000 Zoom has significantly fallen in price since its launch in August 2003 and can now be purchased for under ?200 / $250. But is it the right budget digicam for you? Read my review to find out.

0.5Mb to 1Mb per 3Mp image... that's quite a strong compression ratio and could explain muted images.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I don't know much about digital cameras. I was looking at this cameras specs and was concerned that the single ISO speed was not good. So I looked at review after review. All give it a good rating and none mention the ISO problem. Thank you again. I think that if I had bought this camera, I would have been disappointed.

No problem Patrick - glad to have been of help in your buying decision. I'm not sure why those other reviews that you mention chose to overlook the ISO range (or rather the lack of it).

Brilliant reviews. I was planning to purchase this camera before I read this review and the one on Dimage Z1. I have now more or less decided on the Minolta.

I bought this Fuji Camera and I am pleased with the overall camera, But - The one problem I have is a delay between the shutter and the actual image that is saved. I end up having to take 3-4 pictures to get the image I like. Or try to take a picture 2 second before the action happens. I may get use to it over time but I hate missing the smile or the action is gone.

This review was complete enough, insightful, and helpful in making purchase choices. Many thanks to the reviewer.

very informative and well written review.
I have been tempted by the recent newspaper ads offerring this camera for a mere ?129.89.
I shall not be expecting too much for my money and am now aware of any shortcomings.
Thank You

?129.89 - sounds like a good offer. Who was selling it?

PCWorld - it's on their website: http://www.pcworld.co.uk - I think the offer may end today, as that's what the newspaper ad said the other day (friday). Josh

I read your review before I went and bought this camera, FinePix S3000. The sample images were good enough, seemed to have the right features and low price, so I bought it. There is one thing that didn't get into your review that might have flavoured the camera a shade more to the negative. I would think that this goes with this model being an entry level type. The Macro mode is not zoomable. There is no seperation of optical zoom and digital zoom. But it still delivers a nice macro shot. Just some of the details that go with fitting the cameras features to Entry Level I suppose.
Thanks for the review.

Great review, This will be my first digital camera and have deceided that this is the one Santa will bring me (ok the wife bought it the other day). With regards the negative comment on the ISO settings, fair enough, however if I decide to upgrade then I know where to look for reviews. Anyway, for info, Argos is selling this camera for ?129.99p plus you get a ?10 voucher back. The salesman stated that the package didn't come with a memory chip, it does, but only 16mb !! So I used the ?10 voucher plus some nectar points (everybody needs petrol !!) and I got a 64mb card for ?4.99p. A good first camera at a good price. Thanks again and beware duff info from Argos staff !!
