PhotographyBLOG Review: Sanyo Xacti J4

November 5, 2004 | Mark Goldstein | PhotographyBLOG | 6 Comments |

Sanyo Xacti VPC-J4EXSanyo are not currently one of the major players in the digital camera market, with only a handful of models to choose from. What the Japanese manufacturer lacks in numbers, though, they more than make up for in terms of style and innovation, with cameras like the hybrid Xacti C1 (review coming soon!) marking them out from the competition. The Sanyo Xacti J4 also fits this description. On paper, it’s just another point-and-shoot 4 megapixel model with a short optical zoom. In reality it’s a very stylish, well-made, pocketable camera with lots of innovative features and great image quality. I’ve already told you that I like this camera, so read on to find out exactly why!

Though the Sanyo *brand* isn't one of the major ones, Sanyo is one of the largest digital camera makers in the business as they make OEM cameras for Nikon and Olympus.

Interesting. I wonder if that is still true today for all of Nikon and Olympus's sub DSLR cameras?
Link which backs statement up. http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2000/0320/6507078a.html

btw aren't Canon ccds all made by Sony?

Interesting that such big name like Canon and Nikon don't even make their own sensors etc.

btw just did some googling apparently it goes for DSLR's as well. Nikon D70 uses a Sanyo sensor.

Yes, it's true that most of Sanyo's digital camera output is on behalf of other manufacturers - 90% to be precise:

It is hard to find the J4 in the US. I know of only one
current US reseller of the J4: www.oani.net

I have read that the J4 has shorter battery life
than some of its predecessors, so watch out for that.

I own one of the J4's predecessors,
the old 3 megapixel J1. The J1 produced great
640x480 30fps movies (much as the J4 does).
It's still my favorite pocket camera for daytime use.
Unfortunately the J1 has been discontinued.
The J2 (which was never or rarely sold in the US)
has also been discontinued.

The following text is from an email sent to Robertsons Online concerning the delivery of this camera (Sanyo J4EX) which I ordered 2 weeks ago:-

Hi

I have ordered the above camera from you. Can you please give me a
delivery date so that I can make arrangements to be in when it is
delivered. I was told by you last week that they was a delay and that it
should be despatched this week, can you please confirm this.

I am not too happy that you have taken the money for this item when you
did not even have it in stock, I thought that you weren't supposed to do
that. The reason I wanted to purchase it from you was that I wanted to
use the camera before Christmas. If I had known that you didn't have it
in stock I would either have looked elsewhere for it, or I would have
waited until after Christmas to order it and then looked to buy it in the
sales.
