PhotographyBLOG: Site Layout Issue Fixed

Mark Goldstein | PhotographyBLOG | February 4, 2003 | 10 Comments

Visitors to this site may have noticed one of the following display problems since we launched a few weeks ago:

  • in Internet Explorer 6, on the first page, the text was cut off at the bottom in line with the navigation menu on the right-hand side
  • in Netscape Navigator the navigation menu appeared below the main content of each page, rather than on the right-hand side

About a week ago I fixed the first IE issue, but this in turn caused the Netscape problem. Happily, thanks to Jeffrey Zeldman, I’ve now (fingers crossed) fixed both problems. An Internet Explorer 6 bug was to blame…

If this is meant to be fixed at this time, I'm afraid it isn't. The navigation menu still appears at the bottom in Mozilla.

I'll install Mozilla and test that browser out.

Thanks Steve.

I'm really confused now!

Just downloaded and installed Mozilla 1.2.1. This page loads OK and the navigation appears on the right-hand side.

Which version of Mozilla are you using Steve?

Thanks,
Mark

That's weird. I'm using 1.2.1 as well. Both on Linux here at home and on Windows at work. In both of them the navigation menu is on the right but you need to scroll down to the bottom to see it. Other than that the pages look and work fine.

I don't know if this might shed any light on the problem but when the browser window is at a "normal" sort of width the navigation menu is diagonally below the articles on the right. However as the window is made narrower the navigation menu starts to render below the articles so that when the window is very narrow (say an inch) the navigation menu is directly beneath the articles.

One thing that Zeldman always urges his site visitors to do when he changes his style sheet is empty their browser history/temp files and refresh the page. I think this is because the browser caches the CSS file and doesn't update it to the newer version. I've changed the style sheet that PhotographyBLOG uses, so maybe this is causing the problem on your PCs.

So would you mind doing this Steve and letting me know what happens?

Thanks,
Mark

Clearing the cache has sorted it out. Funnily enough I thought of that at home last night and cleared the cache but it made no difference. Perhaps I didn't clear the memory and disk caches. I'll try again tonight.

Excellent! Thanks Steve grin

It seems that the IE problem is still there though, so bear with me while I try to fix it...
