Photo.net Reviews Portable Digital Storage Devices
Bo Atkins at Photo.net has published a new article about portable storage devices, focusing on reviewing the Tripper device:
“One of the first things you realize once you’ve bought your digital camera is that you need some way to store the images. The memory card in the camera is fine, but it can only store so much data. It can be enough for a day’s outing, but what about a 2 week vacation?
Today’s 6MP DSLRs create JPEG files which are typically 2-3MB in size, or if you shoot RAW images which give the the best possible quality, file sizes can range from 6-8MB depending if you embed a JPEG in with the RAW file. This means that you may only get 56 images on a 512MB memory card if you are shooting RAW images with high quality embedded JPEGs. Even just shooting straight high quality JPEGs, you’ll only get about 170 images on a 512MB card.”

Just bought a Canon EOS 10D last month and now I am looking at purchasing a portable digital storage device. Happened by here, and your review & information look very helpful. I am seriously looking at the Apacer Disc Steno and its rival EZDigiMagic. The Tripper would be my 3rd choice, if I go with a hard drive solution. But I worry about a possible HD crash (I am a klutz), so I believe I will probably go with the CD-R. Thanks!

Hi Patty,
I own the Vosonic X'S-Drive and have used it with my EOS 10D since April of this year. It's quite a simple hard-drive based device, but that means there's less things to go wrong, and it's worked perfectly without any hitches for the 5,000 images that I've taken this year. I'll be posting a review of this device in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime here's the URL for the Vosonic website:

I have returned from a two week trip to California, Utah, Arizona and Nevada. Saw some spectacular scenery amd took loads of pictures - and am really grateful that I took an EZDigimagic CD writer. Not only did it work on both US and UK voltages, but also plugged into the car cigar lighter and used 4 AA batteries (as did my Canon A95 camera). I was able to leave copies of pictures with the many people I knew from the net and had been wanting to meet for years - go for it. A great machine
