Photoxels’ Understanding RAW File Format Tutorial

Mark Goldstein | Technique | June 25, 2004 | 1 Comments

The Canadian digital photography website Photoxels have published an excellent tutorial about the RAW file format.

“Some photographers have mistakenly thought that RAW allowed them to correct exposure errors. Well, to a limited extent, that is true.

However, a picture has to be correctly exposed, whether you are using RAW or not. You cannot take a grossly underexposed or overexposed picture in RAW, and expect to be able to “correct your mistakes.”“

From the linked article: A camera usually allows you to apply exposure compensation to an image, usually from -2EV to +2EV. This is also a setting that is not directly applied to the RAW data, but simply saved in the header.

Really?! When I apply compensation with my camera, the shutter speed (or aperture) changes. I can't imagine that any camera -- and certainly one that supports RAW -- would operate differently.
