Rankin has announced the launch of his brand new biannual, THE HUNGER and its live, digital embodiment, THE HUNGER TV. The magazine will feature a selection of individuals from the worlds of art, design, fashion, drama, music and more, who have also pushed at the cultural boundaries in their own fields. “The Hunger is an idea that was born from the realisation that, more than two decades into my career as a photographer, I am still inspired by what I do every day,” .Rankin said “I named my first retrospective exhibition Visually Hungry – that’s how I felt. In a lot of ways, it is how I think I’ll feel until I die.” The first issue of the magazine will be available on 17th November.

Rankin, renowned photographer and publisher worldwide announces, with support from the Dazed Group, the launch of his brand new biannual, THE HUNGER and its live, digital embodiment, THE HUNGER TV. A pioneering magazine and website which are designed to inspire and incite the creative hunger in us all, Rankin also intends for them to become a platform for young emerging talent across all artistic fields.
THE HUNGER is unique in its strong and unfaltering visual identity, a result of Rankin shooting much of the photography and his being instrumental in directing the overall design and style. The magazine will feature a selection of individuals from the worlds of art, design, fashion, drama, music and more, who have also pushed at the cultural boundaries in their own fields. It is a celebration of artistic passion and enterprise, from the past to the up and coming. Articles on art, design, architecture, literature, entertainment, travel and world affairs go hand-in-hand with beautiful imagery to captivate the discerning reader. Issue One includes in-depth, intelligent interviews with Rhys Ifans, Terence Stamp, Ray Winstone, Danny Dyer, Hayley Atwell, Plan B, Michael Sheen and Sally Hawkins - to name a few – as well as fashion stories with Kelis, Kelly Rowland, Sky Ferreira, Milla Jovovich, Erin O’Connor and Heidi Klum. As a statement of the broad creativity THE HUNGER seeks to inspire, each issue will be available with one female cover and one male cover with Issue One featuring Rhys Ifans and Sky Ferreira.
Online, THE HUNGER TV will be updated weekly with exclusive content including, specially filmed interviews, documentaries and fashion films and is intended to act as the living, breathing embodiment of the magazine.

Twenty years after founding Dazed & Confused with Jefferson Hack, THE HUNGER can be seen as a sister publication alongside AnOther and AnOther Man, but with one key difference: Rankin’s vision. Though each of these have no doubt carried powerful and widely lauded identities of their own, THE HUNGER is cohesive in Rankin’s clear objective: to practice the arts in his own unique way, and to encourage new talent to do the same. Rankin’s appetite for creative communication has never faltered. From high fashion to charity campaigns, Rankin’s experience is both extensive and varied. Through the recent decades his high profile subjects have ranged from pop stars to politicians, musicians to monarchs, including personalities such as Britney Spears, Kate Moss, Madonna, David Bowie, Kevin Spacey, The Rolling Stones, Vivienne Westwood, Damien Hirst, Tony Blair and even Queen Elizabeth II.
From Congo With Love, a large scale outdoor exhibition of Rankin’s photography displayed at London’s South Bank, presented images from Rankin’s recent visit to Congo with the charity Oxfam, and drew upon the love and solidarity found in one of the world’s worst conflict zones. Extraordinary insights were also gained through the portraits he provided for Women’s Aid in relation to the What’s it Going to Take? And Valentine’s Day campaigns.
In 2009, Rankin invited members of the public across the UK to participate in Rankin Live!, which brought together a museum scale retrospective of his work with portraits of 1500 of today’s British public. Participants, selected for their distinctive style, eccentricity and enthusiasm, were invited to the Rankin Live! exhibition in London for their personal shoot, and the portraits produced on the day were hung as part of the ever-changing exhibition.
Since then, Rankin has also opened Annroy, his own gallery, studio and living space in Kentish Town, housing a different exhibition every month to showcase the photographer’s most recent work. Coinciding with the launch of THE HUNGER, Annroy Gallery will be hosting a new exhibition of his work to launch towards the end of November. The exhibition will run for four weeks.
Always fresh and innovative, Rankin’s exhibitions and projects are a reflection of his ultimate view on art and fashion:
“It’s not about being cool, knowledgeable or elitist. It’s not a statement of luxury or a declaration of so-called ‘good taste’. We are creative beings. We have a basic need – an urge – to interact, to discover, to originate, to communicate with each other.”
THE HUNGER and THE HUNGER TV website www.thehungertv.com launch on the 17th November 2011. In addition to the launch of THE HUNGER November also sees Rankin helping to celebrate the Dazed & Confused 20th anniversary with the magazine launching the book, Making It Up As We Go Along and an exhibition at Somerset House. The book, published by Rizzoli is out on October 20,2011. The exhibition, which runs from November 4 until January 29, is an immersive installation charting the visual history of Dazed & Confused Magazine (founded by Jefferson Hack and Rankin in 1991) from its humble beginnings as a foldout poster zine to the indispensable barometer of style and culture it is today.
The book and the exhibition, which is curated by Hack, features work by world-renowned creatives including Rankin, artists Jake and Dinos Chapman, Damien Hirst and Sam Taylor-Wood, photographers Nick Knight, David Sims and Terry Richardson, stylists Katie Grand, Katy England, Alister Mackie and Nicola Formichetti, and designers Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and Gareth Pugh, among many others.
