Samsung UK’s press launch for their extensive range of 2010 cameras gave us the opportunity to get all hands-on with the jewel in their crown, the NX10. Modestly billed as the “Evolution of camera”, the Samsung NX10 is targeted at the so-called “Wannabe” user, who’s apparently looking for perfect image quality from a smaller camera than a traditional DSLR. Therefore the NX10 is up against the likes of the Olympus Pen range and the Panasonic G1 - indeed, we have a few side-by-side comparison shots with the G1 in our photo gallery. Find out just what Samsung UK are going to spend £1million promoting by reading the rest of this article.

It looks like a load of hype to me. It isn't really that much smaller than the alternative is it. Advertisers are like that though aren't they? They love to come up with a largely meaningless USP before an item goes on sale. And journalists fall for it every time.

I'm confused, was the NX10 supposed to be smaller than the GH1? Seeing as how the NX10 has a larger image sensor I think the opposite should be true. Either way, obviously neither GH1 or NX10 where designed with small size as the ultimate goal.

The compact size is a benefit of hybrids in general, Samsung aren't marketing it as "the smallest" (even though its more narrow than the G1). All hybrids are almost identical in size and weight but the NX has better image quality, better dynamic range, shallower depth of field capabilities, AMOLED screen, better battery life and much better ergonomics and layout of buttons.
What is there to complain about?

The NX20 is a bit smaller and lighter. First impressions are that the image quality is better, which makes sense given that it has a bigger sensor.
This video was actually shot on the GH1. Its a good camera but I think I prefer the NX10 for stills. The GH1 is better for video though as it has 1080p and a mic input.

I'm having very little faith in the NX10 as a system. Samsung is missing a real photagraphy partner here and µFT has the more interesting lens lineup (and roadmap) - though more contribution to the system due to more than a single player. If I'm getting an EVIL camera it will very probably a µFT.

The sensor is APS-C size, which offers the possibility of better noise characteristics and dynamic range than the 4/3 sensor which is smaller and more tightly packed.
For JPG, it will depend on the quality of the processing engine in use. One could always shoot RAW and post process.
A major and unknown factor will be the quality of lenses.
