Sermon From A Raw Convert

Mark Goldstein | Technique | January 22, 2004 | 2 Comments

Finnish photographer Petteri Sulonen has published an eloquently written article called “Sermon From A Raw Convert”, which takes a look at the advantages and disadvantages of the RAW file format, and explains why Petteri has opted to shoot in RAW mode rather than JPEG. It’s also a direct response to a similar article by Ken Rockwell, who argues that JPEG is the way to go. I’ll let you read both articles and make up your own minds…

actually, Kenn does make a valid point:
the archiving of RAW files. Since it's propriety, and subject to change (D2H RAW format is different from D1h RAW format), you never know if you'll be able to read it in a couple of years.. interesting..

I skipping all this. Everyone can make up their own mind and my feeling is they are all correct in their arguments. I made up my mind when I had my E-10, raw is the way go for me. But everyone should make up their own mind because they have the tools at hand and if can come to their own conculsions. Am I worried about the RAW conversion apps I use? Nope. I had to used the Olympus's RAW converter then Adobe comes out with theirs that support E-10 raw files and have done better than Olympus. The day with come when Abode might stop supporting my D-30, D-60, 10D and E-10 RAW files but I will know that in advance and will convert my RAWs files to 16Bit TIFFs. That day is many years away.
