Should Photography be Illegal?

Mark Goldstein | Websites | September 20, 2004 | 2 Comments

The latest issue of the monthly online photo magazine, Vivid Light Photography, has just been published. Should Photography be Illegal? is the lead article:

“There is a delicate balance to be struck between diligence and harassment. Law enforcement would be horribly irresponsible if they didn’t take notice of photographers and videographers around potential terrorist targets. If an attack occurs and it was found that terrorists had scouted the location unmolested there would be an outcry at law enforcement’s lack of diligence. Given the current, real threat from terrorists an officer approaching you and asking a few questions or asking for ID is not harassment - provided they are professional and courteous in their approach.”

If I may, An American's point of view (mine):

A few month's ago the planes were divertred to take off from Laguardia Airport in New York, so that they would take off over your head as you stand on Ditmars Blvd.

Seeing the planes in the air, my friend and I, on our way home from a photo shoot, decided to go to the airport to take some pics.

After a half hour we were surrounded by three plains clothes detectives asking what we are doing. I bit my tounge as I was steaming mad inside. My friend said there were no signs prohibiting photogrqaphy. They took our licenses to their cars and brought them back to us about 10 minutes later.

As they walked away my only words to them were "My country is dead". The cop asked what was my country and I only responded by repeating the same statement until they left.

While we were taking pictures there was a guy drag racing his car on the same street adjacent to the Academy of Aeronautics. A narrow street where he could have easily jumped the curb an killed someone on the sidewalk. The cops did nothing to this guy.

Should I give up my right to tell the cop to "Go to "He..."
when he asked me for my license?.. in the name of security from a terroist action?

My answer is an emphatic NO!!

Limit your Freedom to gain Security and you loose your Freedom.

Sorry to hear your story. These stories are poping up with alarming regularity and frankly make me sick.
