Sigma 50-150mm Lens Review
The-Digital-Picture have reviewed the new Sigma APO 50-150mm F2.8 II EX DC HSM lens.
“The Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 II EX DC HSM Lens is a very attractive combination of focal length range, wide aperture and size/weight. Unfortunately, focus calibration issues appear to be prevalent in this lens. All three purchased-retail-new copies of this lens I tried strongly front-focused on both my Canon EOS Rebel XSi / 450D and Canon EOS 40D DSLRs. All three focused consistently, but all focused well in front of the subject.”

There are a lot of reviewers who have had focus issues with this lens. So many that I don't think it's just the web where bad info gets reported, but a chronic problem at Sigma's end. The-Digital-Pictures's review makes the point, 0 out of 3 properly auto-focussing lenses bought new is not a good showing. The high likely-hood that I'd have to send it back for calibration, which may or may not work, is in my view too much time and trouble whatever the price. Does anybody know if the AF problems with this lens affect Sigma's own cameras as well?

I bought the lens a few days ago to use on my Canon 7D.
My initial conclusion is that this is not an all purpose walkaround lens. To get good, clear photos, one must take care. It needs to be on a tripod for shutter speeds lower than 1/250. For certain situations, you may need to use single point autofocus or zone autofocus as opposed auto autofocus using all the focus points.
If used properly, it takes excellent photographs.
