Sony has updated the firmware of its A230, A330 and A380 digital SLR cameras, all of which have been reviewed on this site. Version 1.10 brings about the following improvement: when the metering mode is set to centre-weighted or spot, the exposure will be locked when focus is confirmed. This applies to shooting in AF mode.

I think a great combo for capturing kids in the price range of the A230 and D60 is the Canon Rebel XSi with the EF 50mm f/1.8 lens. The reason that I point you toward the Canon is because the 50mm lens is a more affordable lens than what Sony and Nikon offer at that focal length. Otherwise, I think the A230 and D60 would be great options – and I would give the edge to the D60. Bear in mind though that Nikon’s 50mm f/1.8 lens doesn’t autofocus on the D60. As a result, you would have to spend more on the 50mm Nikon lens to get autofocus.
