Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 Conversion Lenses

Mark Goldstein | Digital Compact Cameras | October 3, 2005 | 8 Comments

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1The new 10 megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 has a 24-120mm lens, which will be wide enough for most people but a bit lacking at the telephoto end. I took a few photos of the wide-angle and telephoto conversion lenses at a recent Sony press conference. As you will see, both the wide angle and tele convertors are best described as “massive”! Personally I can’t see too many people buying them - after all, one of the advantages of the DSC-R1 is that it is smaller and more portable than a digital SLR. That definitely wouldn’t be the case if you had to carry the wide-angle and telephoto conversion lenses as well! Note that these are the production models that you will be able to buy in the shops - they won’t be getting any smaller…

yes interesting but let time to see how good it will be. the f828 had all the components but was bad. sony does not have the success of PANASONIC with their big zoom.but i give them the chance as i am a ZEISS fan.sony and minolta should come with something as interesting as OLYMPUS AND PANASONIC.

And I bet the price will be just as massive. At first I thought the R1 was cool, but it's way too expensive.

You'll have to be a hard-core Sony fan to go this route. You'd be better off with a D50 IMHO

I have seen many pictures OF the conversion lenses but have yet to see one photo taken using one. Does anyone have a photo taken with the wide-angle conversion lense?

Guy, There are issues with the F-828, I agree, knowing the camera's limitations and working around them is easy. I depend upon my F-828, and it does a great job for me, I just went over 10,000 images, a great lens, no problems yet, always with me.
The H-1 is a very highly rated camera that does indeed rival the Panasonic FZs, IMHO.
I recommend both the F828 and H-1!

Thanks for your input Nick, but I'm looking for photos taken with the DSC-R1 wide-angle conversion lens.

Brent, my comment was directed to Guy (#1)
because of his opinion of the F-828. I have the conversion lens, wide, for the F-717, quite an impressive piece of glass, I feel that Sony produces great optics, I expect you will find that to be true with the options for the R-1 too. Good luck!
