The Sony Handycam NEX-VG10E is an interchangeable-lens Full-HD camcorder using the Sony E lens mount - the same as the one found on the new Sony NEX digital system cameras - and an APS HD CMOS sensor. The NEX-VG10E comes supplied as standard with an image-stabilised E18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS lens, optimised for video shooting and offering smooth, ultra low-noise autofocus and stepless diaphragm control. Alongside the three currently available E-mount lenses, users of the NEX-VG10E can mount a wide variety of A-mount DSLR optics by using the optional LA-EA1 mount adapter. The Sony NEX-VG10E comes equipped with a 3”, 921,000-dot LCD screen and a 1,152,000-dot electronic viewfinder. Apart from capturing Full-HD video, the Handycam NEX-VG10E can also shoot stills at a resolution of 14.2 megapixels. Availability is slated for September in the U.S.A. and October in Europe. The price is $2,000 including the 18-200mm lens.

At the heart of the NEX-VG10E is a 14.2 effective megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor that’s teamed with Sony’s powerful BIONZTM processor to capture very high resolution video and still images. Approximately 19.5 times bigger than the standard sensor found in other consumer camcorders, the APS-C sized imager also enables an extremely shallow depth of field. This allows videographers to achieve ‘cinematic’ results with beautiful background defocus (bokeh). In addition, the ability to capture DSLR-quality still images gives videographers extra shooting flexibility on assignment with less to carry.

Full HD 1920x1080 video images are captured in AVCHDTM format at up to the maximum 24 Mbps bit rate for superlative detail and clarity. Unlike many digital still cameras including DSLR that support HD video, there’s virtually no restriction on continuous shooting time. Just slip in your choice of either Memory Stick PRO DuoTM or SD media cards and capture Full HD video and JPEG still images for easy transfer into your existing PC storage and editing environment.

The NEX-VG10E comes supplied as standard with an image-stabilised E18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS lens that offers a powerful 11x optical zoom range. Because of its optimized design for video shooting, this high-quality E-mount lens offers smooth, ultra low noise autofocus and iris control. In-built Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation assures clearer video images when you’re shooting handheld. At wide angle settings, Active Mode enhances anti-shake performance even further, steadying jittery images even while walking. The lens also features a circular aperture for the creation of beautiful bokeh effects whether you’re shooting video or stills.

Reflecting the demands of serious videographers, sound quality matches the phenomenal imaging performance of the NEX-VG10E. The Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone uses advanced processing algorithms to combine signals from four separate omnidirectional microphone capsules. The result is exceptionally clear stereo audio with a highly directional response: this allows videographers to capture more sound from the subject they’re shooting, and less of distracting sounds around them. There’s also a jack for adding an optional external stereo mic, plus a headphone jack for audio monitoring.

With a photo-realistic 921k dot resolution, the 7.5cm/3 inch-type Xtra Fine LCD features TruBlackTM technology for an exceptionally detailed, high contrast view of images and menu settings. The LCD is supplemented by a high-resolution (1152k dot) electronic viewfinder that assists easy framing and monitoring. An intuitive jog dial and hotkeys make it easy to navigate camera menus and adjust shooting parameters. Please bear with me, I've been told I'm an idiot. The problem is that I don't understand the purpose of this camera. Everything I've read about video in DSLR's says that it's great - for a DSLR. That dedicated video cameras always have better video. Yet, here's Sony making a new video camera based on what I assume should be considered inferior technology? What am I missing?

The issue with video shot with a DSLR is that the audio is always bad, or unusable. Most I've seen don't have the option to use an external audio source such as a mic.

The price is not bad so if the features are good, I could see this being useful.

DSLR video can be great, but they can lack in audio area like Jim said. Also the biggest problem I find is the lack of continuous auto focus, like a real camcorder. The current contrast based auto focus are worthless. If this Sony can achieve fast auto focus while shooting, I think they would have a winner here. Here's a HD cam with interchangable lens, with stills that doesn't suck. Add in pro level audio and traditional camcorder controls, what's not to like? This would be a perfect all in one device!

@ Bill:

Well, Bill, this is where we're headed. As far as HD is concerned, this is the best package of a HD camera that is also capable of shooting excellent stills. You saw that Canon thing the other day, about how it's going to be in 2030, where the video capture is going to be so amazing that we can pull stills from video? Well, this is sort of the first step.
Inferior? No. For its power-to-sensor ratio, going with the smaller chip like this extends battery time. And as far as our 1080/24p video on 16x9 HDTVs are concerned - you don't need to shoot any higher as it would be a waste of energy.
In the future when they can slot a serious high pixel count and shoot video in Ultra-HD, as that Canon was demonstrating - there won't be a need for stills cameras in the future. We'll just have a smaller form factor, but we all know that. Might as get used to it.

Bill: The point is the big chip. Big chips are like big V8s, they do things well without breaking sweat. Big chips see well in the dark, offering high ISO levels with ease these days. They also offer you the chance to use far more aperture values before diffraction sets in, such that you can selectively control the depth of field - very difficult to do with a 1"/3 chipped camcorder. Of course the supplied zoom lens has a pretty restricted aperture range, but then big chips need big (expensive) lenses, so nothing's for free.

For me as a documentary filmmaker this is a kind of revolution. The same high quality picture like the one on DSLRs but without the fiddling with the inaccurate controls, and with a dedicated mic, a proper viewfinder and handling like a videocamera. Remember when Sony launch the VX1000 and BBC bought 100 of them on the spot. That scared the hell out of Sony Prof departement. This is the same kind of revolution as the VX1000 was. But I guess the professional one is just around the corner this time...

What about the rolling shutter effect? Will there be any when shooting fast moving subjects or when using the long end of the telephoto lens handheld?

And why not include a 1080p, instead of interlaced option? Even the Sanyo HD2000 can do that. 720 60fps option? Hello? I can't understand that.

24 mpbs? I think Canon SX20 IS can do that...

Finally, having this "enormous" sensor, what about an intelligent zoom option to increase the max reach? The 200mm lens (300mm 35 equivalent) could very well convert into 600mm). Will this be possible?

The disadvantge of Filming video with dslr are 1) audio 2) rolling shuttle 3) hand held/ handling convinence eg zooming while filming.
But however the ability of customizing zooming n aperture size allow effects professional filimng experience like movie makers -sumthg that conventional consumer videocam lacks.
With this new Sony cam I believe they shld overcome all the issue with dslr video filming but yet maintain the pros of it.
1) audio - build in mic & ability to for external mic input. 2) rolling shutter - using video cam sensor instead of dslr sensor will solve this problem 3) handling ease - suitable handgrips design. Not sure if zooming can b done by 1 finger push button like normal consumer vidcam thou.

Videographer turns to dslr for the bokeh, they willing to sacrifice the sound & focusing of a camcorder for the sake of the bokeh.

this camcorder is something...miracle..a blessing.

with its ability to get the depth just as dslr (although micro 4/3 doesnt produce bokeh like fullframe - its still far better than my fx7 camcorder.) High quality sound, and more important, handling of the camcorder and not looking like you shooting still image.

i would sell my 5dmkII to buy 2pcs of this camera!!

all i wonder is, if the sensor is far larger than normal camcorder, does this camera have higher dynamic range?hows the lowlight ability?

Dear Friends, please help me...... vg10 e video is not smooth to play... how can i fix this problem... i know its 25p recording and plays 50i, but how to convert to play smoothy video. please, please.......help me..... i'm really upset with his cam... i think fooled.... with SONY VG10e... First thing to ask Ramesh is does your footage play smoothly when you replay it in the camera? You're not expecting 50i smoothness in pans and zooms if you're shooting 25p, are you? I suspect the answer is yes, replay is smooth in camera, so it must come down to your editing program or your computer. If possible get a friend to test some of your footage straight from your card to see if this is where your problem lies.
