Steves Digicams Reviews Addonics Multi Function Recorder
Steves Digicams have just reviewed the Addonics Multi Function Recorder, a portable storage device that uses CD-R/RW discs.
“The Addonics MFR is quite possibly the most useful gadget that we’ve reviewed in a long time. It’s the answer to “where do I store all of my pictures when we go on that extended vacation without taking a laptop or buying a pile of memory cards”—it lets you quickly and easily transfer images from the most popular flash memory cards to CD-R/RW discs. And it can do this anywhere, anytime, without need of AC power or a computer thanks to its rechargeable Li-ion battery pack. “

This is great, but it will be truly exciting when it can burn DVDs - 4.5 GB per disc means looong vacations without having to carry a wallet of blank CDs.

This is exactly the kind of thing I like to see on PhotographyBLOG. The zillions of links to camera reviews are OK, but I usually find the links to reviews of photography support items more worthwhile.

I guess it depends on your viewpoint - if you've already got a decent digicam then you're almost certainly not interested in the camera review links, and much more interested in the stuff that helps you use your camera more effectively. I know what you mean about the zillions of reviews, but that's the focus of most of the photography sites out there.

We purchased our initial unit about a week ago. It did not work well right out of the box, and after going to the tech support site, we updated the firmware. It didn't work at all after that. Tech support sent us another version of the firmware, and it looked promising, however, after trying to download from several different cards to several different brands of CDs, we have yet to have a successful copy burn. Tech support requires a completed RMA application form, which was submitted yesterday, with no response so far on the needed RMA number.
We bought this unit as a test for the consideration of additional units. Unless things get much better, I doubt that we'll be buying any additional MFR units for copy work, as our MFR has not been satisfactory so far.
When you buy a product such as this, have to do a firmware upgrade right out of the box, and then another to even get the unit to function, it doesn't speak well of their quality control. As we await the needed RMA number, we are not a happy and satisfied customer.

This unit does not burn from Lexar branded Memory Sticks. I have a 128MB translucent purple stick with the write warning LED, and the MFR can read from it to display to a TV, but can't seem to burn to CD without corrupting the entire CD. I found this out after burning from 2 Sony branded memory sticks first. Very disappointing. Addonics tech support was unable to answer why this is. You would think that there would be a database of what cards do and do not work with this device. Hey Addonics... get a clue.

I bought an Addonics MFR in May of 2004 for a trip to China. It worked well, but only with SanDisk CF cards. On my next trip, the same CF cards that worked before only worked occasionally. Addonics tech support advised me to format my CF cards, which I already do with each use.
I now must burn several CDs to get a successful burn. I verify each CD on a television before I blank out the CF card, so the unit is not portable but requires access to a TV.
Several messages to Addonics tech support were not answered. This problem is still not resolved.

Great device and seems to work well except for the spanning of files over multiple CDs needs a firmware update. Dissappointing information for the perfect idea to initialize backup sets off from cards.
Anyone had any luck with anything else, like Roadstor or others?
