Storing Your Photos Online

Mark Goldstein | Websites | January 19, 2005 | 3 Comments

BBC News takes a look at the increasing number of companies that are offering storage of digital photos on the internet:

“Marcus Hawkins, editor of Digital Camera magazine, said: “As file sizes of pictures increase, storage becomes a problem. People are using their hard drives, backing up on CD and DVD and now they are using online storage solutions. They are a place to store pictures, to share their pictures with families and friends and they can print out their photos.”

Web service plans are getting cheaper. I recently signed on for 1gb of storage and 40gb monthly transfer at $7.95 a month (about $120 a year, with domain name)*.

That seems like a fairly inexpensive option for posting large size images.

FWIW, I've also been playing with:

1) the "zoomify" tool, for panning and zooming large images on-line.

and

2) some PHP code to cycle pictures so that they can be offerred in full size, but only a few per day.

The both seem like possible solutions.

* - i have no relationship with LunarPages other than as a satisfied customer.

gulp I've got over 400 old family photo's from early 20th Century that I'm scanning as jpg files. McIntosh have a make-your-own-movie from photos software but what can I use on my PC that I could give to people in the DVD format? I use Windows xp.
