Sunday Morning Photographer: Clean, Lube, Adjust
Mike Johnston’s Sunday Morning Photographer column this week considers whether or not you should have a used camera cleaned when you buy it, or if you should take a chance and leave well alone.
“It’s always a tough decision whether to get a camera repaired, especially when the cost of the repair is more than the cost of the camera. My advice to readers back when I was East Coast Editor of Camera & Darkroom magazine was that it is worth it if you intend to use the camera…”

The article brings a bit of a ethical twinge, to me at least: the author describes a guy who bought an expensive, collectible lens and then had it multicoated, greatly increasing its utility but reducing its value on the collectors market. The author buys this lens for the new, lowered price and says:
"So did the collector make a bad decision having the lens multicoated? I suppose so, from an accountant's perspective. But not from mine. It made the lens better to use. And after all, what's the point of these things, if not to take pictures with them?"
Yeah, no kidding, not from your perspective! The author acknowledges that the coating *increased* the value to him personally, but he had no qualms about ripping the seller off even further.
I know, I know, free market and all that, but it seems pretty hypocritical, especially after the author talks about gladly paying extra for a recent CLA'ed camera -- isn't this coating a similar improvement (since we know that he isn't a real orthodox collector)?
