Sunday Morning Photographer: I知 a Sony Man

Mark Goldstein | Websites | August 24, 2003 | 6 Comments

In the return of the Sunday Morning Photographer column this week, Mike Johnston explains why the Sony F-828 is a more exciting camera than the Canon EOS 300D.

“But I have to report that I find myself much more strongly drawn to the new Sony F-828. Of all the digital cameras I致e owned, used, held, or seen, the Sony F-717 (which I wrote about here) was, so far, the only one that I致e placed in my personal pantheon of favorite cameras. It was nifty, fun, cool, and different.

That last word is key. Different. The 300D, to me, is a mass-market 10D, and what痴 a 10D? A digital 10S. So, okay. (Cover your mouth when you yawn like that.)”

He's right. Between the two camera's, I think I'd rather have the Sony, too. With the Sony, it's all about that's been added. With the 300D, it's about what's been left out.

I shoot entirely in the Sony F717! It's by far the best non-SLR on the market in terms of interface and image quality.

Yes, I'm upgrading to the Canon 10D next week, but I will miss some of the features I have become spoiled by. Sony has employed ideas that the other guys should taken a lesson from. Just because a camera is professional, why should it be difficult to use?

Yeah, right. With pixels 1/8th the size of those on the 300D, the 828 will be hard-pressed to come up with acceptable image quality even at ISO 100. But, hey, image quality is a small price to pay for the privilege of having the red T* mark on the lens.

Comparing the 717 or 828 to an SLR is not entirely fair.

Perhaps, but that's what Mike Johnston is doing, and the prices are close enough that the cameras will indeed be compared.

Of course, we'll have to wait until the reviews are in before we can make any definitive pronouncements on either camera's image quality.

I am looking forward to seeing some hands on reviews and comparisons of the latest high end digital camera's from Sony, Fuji, Minolta, and also the Pentax *istD when it appears.

I think the 10D still wins on image quality, especially at high ISO settings, but the Sony 8 Megapixel, and Minolta Image Stabilisation will be interesting comparisons.
