Jessops, the only UK retailer to offer the Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD in September, is now taking pre-orders for the lens. The VC abbreviation in the product name stands for “Vibration Compensation” - so it is an optically stabilised lens -, whilst the USD designation indicates that the lens has an Ultrasonic Silent Drive auto-focus motor, which also enables full-time manual focus override. The the Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD utilises an advanced optical design that features an LD (Low Dispersion) and an XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) lens element made from specialised materials that prevent chromatic aberration. The Tamron SP 70-300mm lens is available to pre-order now at jessops.com for £429.99.

Jessops Press Release

Jessops first to market with the award winning Tamron SP 70 – 300mm telephoto lens

Customers can purchase this lens exclusively through Jessops for the month of September

Jessops, Britain’s biggest photographic retailer is offering its customers the chance to be the first to snap up the award winning Tamron SP 70-300m lens. Jessops is the first UK retailer to stock the EISA awarded SP 70-300mm lens and will be the only UK retailer selling it in September. This outstanding must-have telephoto lens was crowned Best Product Zoom Lens of the year 2010-2011, boasting an excellent set of features including an XLD lens element, image stabilisation, and a turbo-speed silent autofocus, making it perfect for sports and action shots, whilst delivering outstanding results in low-light conditions.

The remarkable Tamron SP 70-300m lens scooped up the coveted EISA award for ‘the razor-sharp image quality that makes full-frame photos look like medium-format images’ This outstanding lens is ideal for Wildlife or street photography as the near-silent autofocus system works in harmony with the superb image stabilisation affording sharp and detailed pictures more easily in low-light conditions.

The lens is equipped with Tamron’s first-ever ultrasonic auto-focus drive USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive), which allows for faster focusing, making it perfect sport, motor racing and other fast-moving subject photography. With advanced motor technology and newly developed software, Tamron’s USD delivers precise and noiseless focusing at turbo speed.

The lens also boasts Tamron’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilisation to assist in hand-held photography, not only at long focal length ranges where blurring is common, but also under low-lit conditions, dramatically enhancing photographic freedom. This technology allows photographers to make the most of photographic opportunities at dusk, perhaps one of the most difficult settings to shoot in, allowing the photographer to be more creative with their shots rather than constantly worrying about previous technical limitations.

The XLD (Extra-Low Dispersion) lens element anchors the overall performance of the new SP 70-300mm lens and reduces image noise, often a problem with telephoto lenses, and delivers high-contrast, crisp clear images.

The Tamron SP 70-300mm lens is available to pre-order now at http://www.jessops.com for £429.99.

Interesting pricing.
I'd have expected it to be a bit cheaper, maybe £380-ish.
The problem with the price is that the Nikon 70-300 is available for the same amount, or cheaper.
I suspect most people would go for the Nikon.
Of course, the Tamron price should drop in a few weeks.
But even so, I'd take the Nikon any day.

@Steve: You're right. That price seems a bit excessive. Amazon.com shows the lens for pre-order too (in the U.S. presumably) for US$449.

Agreed, price is a bit high and I'd rather have the Nikon version, but I have always thought Tamron made a decent lens.
