The Development of the Ricoh GR Digital
Ricoh have posted a self-indulgent but quite informative look at the development of the new Ricoh GR Digital camera on their website.
“Additionally, we also wanted to make a camera that brought a smile to one’s face, just by holding it. In order to achieve this, we had to concentrate not just on the design and operability, but also the texture and grip of the camera. “I think that this is why there are so many fans of the GR cameras”, said Mr. Higuchi. “We were aiming for a camera that feels good in your hands, that has easy to use buttons and dials, with a lingering sensation of reverberation after pressing the shutter release button. Basically, the camera should communicate a sense of comfort from the moment it is in your hands, with a continued feeling of “enjoyment” from the second you switch the power on.”

#1 GARY POGODA
Ricoh states the goal of the original GR1 was to provide SLR quality
pictures from a compact size camera. Similarly, the goal of their GR
Digital was to provide DSLR quality pictures from a compact digicam.
One thing for which Ricoh failed to account is, when they created the
GR1, they retained the SLR's 35mm film size, which when combined
with a superior lens, was indeed able to deliver SLR quality. With the
GR Digital, however, Ricoh departed from that successful formula by
utilizing a 1/1.8" CCD, which no DSLR would ever employ, and which
is certainly NOT capable of delivering DSLR quality images.
