The trials and tribulations of editing…

Mark Goldstein | Personal | June 23, 2003 | 6 Comments

Editing your own work can be a painful process. Take these 3 images below, which were taken within the space of a minute at the East Finchley Festival yesterday afternoon.

At the time I was convinced that the middle image was a winner, with the conductor’s hands framing his face and the drummer hitting the cymbal. Only when I reviewed it later did I realise that there’s quite a lot of dead space at the top of the frame. The image on the right fills the entire frame, but the drummer is no longer playing. The left image strikes the right balance, with the conductor filling the top of the frame and the drummer playing, but this time the conductor’s right hand is partly obscuring his face.

Which begs the question of which image is the “best” one? I’m still undecided, which is where you come in grin Simply reply to this post, saying which image is your favourite and why. Personally my biggest worry is that all 3 images miss the mark in some way, and that none of them are the “best”...

The last one because it is a tighter shot then the other two.

Why not crop the 2nd one for a tighter shot. Isn't the old adage that when you think the shot is right, move closer? I agree with you. I think the 2nd is best, due to the hands.

I agree with Ed go for number two with a tighter crop and possibly clone out the bald head in the middle

I'd go for 3, it has (IMHO) the best facial expression. The hands are nice too. The whole picture radiates both concentration and enjoyment.

I vote for number 3 for a variety of reasons.

1.) The facial expression on number 2 seems that of frustration instead of concentration. So unless you wanted to emphasize frustration, I prefer the expression in number 3 even without the drummer actually playing.

2.) The third shot is a tighter crop than the second one. Perhaps recrop #2 like some other commenters have suggested?

3.) In the first shot both the hands and the drumstick lead my eye out of the picture frame making for what seems an unbalanced photo (at least to me). I prefer the composition in both Number 2 and Number 3, both of which create a more central triangle.

4.) As you pointed out, I think the conductor's hand blocking part of his face in the first photo makes it an even weaker image as well.

So that's 3 votes for Conductor #3 and 2 votes for Conductor #2.

Thanks for your feedback everyone!
