The Winner Is…

Mark Goldstein | Digital Compact Cameras | April 20, 2004 | 7 Comments

Konica Minolta DiMAGE A2Michael Reichmann over at Luminous Landscape has attempted to pick a winner from the crop of 8 megapixel digital cameras that he has been reviewing in the last couple of months.

“Of course the question that everyone wants to know, and which I receive countless e-mails asking, is - which one is the best? Since I know of no on-line or magazine reviewer that will provide you with a straightforward answer to this (and they’re probably wise not to), I’ll do my best to answer the question. You may not like the answers though.”

I have tested the Sony, Minolta and Canon too (actually I'm testing the Pro 1 right now) and I agree with Reichmann. I liked the A2 the most.

I agree with Michael that none of the 8MP camera stands out as a clear winner. Different reviewers have different recommendations, for example Phil of dpreview has chosen Olympus C8080 as the winner. Regardless of whether you agree with Michael, he has stated the most important point - one should select their own preference model based on their set of selection criteria, and try them out before buying. It is not wise to be influenced by some other people's opinion.

In my own opinion, I will not buy any one of these and go straight to the DSLR, such as Nikon D70.

I have worked with the Minolta, Canon, Nikon and Olympus 8mp cameras, and I agree that the A2 is the best of the bunch. In my opinion, the Anti-Shake feature is what sets it apart from all the rest.

I've been using an A1 since last August and absolutely love it. Nothing else comes close, with it's AS, *manual* zoom (very important to me) and excellent RAW support. It handles better than any other camera I've ever used.

I suppose when the next batch of DSLRs arrive I'll be tempted to switch again (perhaps the Dynax 7 Digital will deliver), but if funds permit I'd like to keep the A1 as well. As a lightweight travelling companion, it excels.

Things I don't like are the noise at higher ISOs, and hot pixel noise at long exposures caused by heating of the CCD.

It seems that Phil prefers the Olympus C-8080, which most other reviewers have disliked!

The magazine, Amatuer photographer or something similar, compared all these cameras except for the Olympus, and it rated the Canon as the best - although they said they wouldn't pay £800 for it (which is the price they listed it at).
