Thom Hogans’ Ultimate Compact Camera

Mark Goldstein | Digital Compact Cameras | June 16, 2007 | 3 Comments

Sigma DP1Thom Hogan has laid down a challenge to the camera manufacturers by listing his must-have features for the ultimate digital compact. You might also want to read my previous posts, Is the Sigma DP1 the Ultimate Compact Camera? and Is the Ricoh GX100 the Ultimate Compact Camera?

“Personally, I’m sick and tired of all this mediocre me-too camera design. Not a single compact digital camera meets my requirements for such a product, and I think that most serious and professional photographers would agree with me on that. Rather than just sit and rant about the onslaught of me-too compact digital cameras, though, I decided to do something about it.”

A bit of a fat-head, I reckon. Seems to be somewhat insulated from the balancing act the rest of us, including business, have to perform.

...coming from someone who has no idea who this guy is. Is he really so important? 'spose he must be.

well,

back in the day of 35mm film, there were plenty of me-too point and shoots. but there were also some better ones; I think yashica made one with a good reputation, as did contax.

I think all he's saying is that while consumer manufacturers are in a race to provide the most mediocre camera at the lowest price with the most advertisable features, there really ought to be some better models out there, that sacrifice useless features and rock-bottom price for some quality glass.

The sigma is a good example. It could have been very very cool, but they crippled it with a f/4 lens. They make a very good f/1.4 lens for SLRs, so I would have loved to see that (or maybe even just a f/2) used.

That said, I see why camera manufacturers haven't. Specs are still changing wildly from year to year (although hopefully the megapixel race will stop soon), so camera models become dated very quickly. The sort of enthusiast point-and-shoot I'm looking for would likely need to remain current for several years to sell in high-enough numbers to pay off its development.

Ha-ha. There are 12 Mpix at 1/1.7" cameras now. The senseless race goes on...
