“Best Professional DSLR”

Pentax Imaging Systems is pleased to announce that the PENTAX 645D lens-interchangeable, medium-format digital SLR camera, has been selected the Best DSLR Professional in Europe 2011 by the prestigious Technical Image Press Association (TIPA).

The PENTAX 645D, which was launched in the UK in September 2010, was singled out because of the camera’s exceptional image quality, excellent reliability and outstanding operability.
TIPA members highlighted several key features in its official citation:
-        the design build and feature specs

-      super-fine image quality delivered by 40 effective megapixels

-      the all-glass trapezoid pentaprism finder makes for a dazzling capture experience

-      impressive lens compatibility, encompassing both the new D FA autofocus lenses as well as the older 645 lenses

-      a great choice for outdoor and location photographers due to the camera’s magnesium alloy body being fully dust-proof and weather- resistant

TIPA is an independent, non-profit organisation comprising the chief editors and technical editors of 29 leading photo and imaging magazines in 14 countries, most of them in Europe. This year’s winners in various categories were selected from all new photo and imaging products introduced to the market from April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011.

How the hell can it win an award for 'excellent reliability' when it's been available for less than a year? Just as one might have suspected - TIPAs are just industry back-slapping exercises. Everyone gets one in turn.

Good point, Jim. A reference to (apparent) build quality might be OK along with something about shutter cycles, materials, etc. We didn't see that in this short piece.

Reliability should be demonstrated.

OTOH, some of the work I do demands that I make and justify design and investment decisions based on expected reliability. One might come to some conclusions based on design and manufacture. I'd buy the TIPA assessment of reliability if they'd dissected the camera. As you wrote, they don't work at that level.
