US Airports to Check Cameras

Mark Goldstein | Global | August 6, 2003 | 2 Comments

“U.S. officials are preparing a warning to airlines alerting them to watch out for travelers carrying electronic devices that may be carrying small weapons or bombs.

The warning, which is due Tuesday, follows raids of al Qaeda safe houses which turned up evidence the group is trying to modify electronic devices to carry small weapons or explosives, administration officials told CNN.

A camera flash was found being modified to convert to, or carry, a stun gun, the officials said.

There is also, from interrogations, a concern about toys, specifically “stuffed animal toys.”

Several news agencies yesterday reported that US airport security staff have been instructed to check electronic devices as a potential terroist threat, including cameras and flash guns. So if you’re travelling to the USA fully expect to have your camera checked by airport officials when you check-in.

This should be a total fiasco! Assuming that a group like al Qaeda would do a semi-professional job converting personal electronics into weapons; the resulting consumer electronic/weapon should be almost totally undetectable by airport security. It seems to me that the biggest problem with "checking" something like a camera flash, to verify that it's not also a stun-gun, is that the inspector has to know what it looked like originally (internally) and how it behaved . Up to now Security has consisted of "show me that this turns on" followed by (at most) a check for oxidizer residue. Having to perform a more comprehensive visual and functional check on every piece of electronic equipment that goes thru security should be the nail in the coffin of an already over-taxed system...

Mike Strock emailed this about this topic, the content of which is reproduced below:

"It's getting to the point where if I want to travel anywhere anymore I've got three choices:

o Drive
o Train
o Fly, but send all my luggage (packed extremely well) via FedEx. Walk on the plane with just my person. No carry on baggage, no nothing. Naked probably would be best (actually not if you've seen me), just to alleviate security issues.

Argh. I wanna stay home. smile"
