WD(R) Unveils Smaller, Smarter and More Secure Ultra-Portable My Passport(TM) Essential(TM) Drives With New WD SmartWare(TM) Software
Pocket-Size Drives with WD SmartWare and Hardware Encryption Keep Consumers’ Digital Lives Secure in One Place
LAKE FOREST, Calif., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/—WD® (NYSE: WDC), the world’s leader in external storage solutions, today introduced its smaller, smarter and more secure My Passport(TM) Essential(TM) and My Passport for Mac® ultra-portable external hard drives featuring WD’s new WD SmartWare(TM) software and equipped with hardware-based encryption. The new My Passport drives are more than 20 percent smaller than the previous generation My Passport.
The new portable drives with WD SmartWare software visually present consumers’ data in a control center, providing them peace of mind that their precious photos, videos and files are securely protected. Available now at select retailers and the WD online store (shopwd.com), the new My Passport Essential and My Passport for Mac drives are offered in capacities ranging from 320 GB to 1 TB and come in a range of colors including Pacific Blue, Real Red, Cool Silver and Midnight Black.
According to research firm Parks Associates, the average U.S. broadband household currently has over 120 gigabytes (GB) of digital media and files, which is expected to grow to over 1 terabyte (TB) of data by 2013. And while 70 percent of consumers back up their content, the majority of these people are using manual, cumbersome methods such as copying and pasting to multiple CDs and DVDs, and less than 18 percent use software that automatically and continuously backs up their content.
When the My Passport Essential drive is plugged in for the first time, the simple and intuitive first backup process launches automatically. The real-time visual interface of WD SmartWare software gives users a reassuring view of their backup as it happens. After the first backup, users’ files are backed up automatically every time they change or add a file.
My Passport Essential and My Passport for Mac drives also feature user-selected password protection combined with military-grade 256-bit hardware encryption, which scrambles files before they are stored. Typically found only on much more expensive drive systems, the encryption acts as a virtual padlock to keep users’ data secure.
“The smaller and sleeker design of WD’s redesigned My Passport drives, combined with the intuitive visual backup experience of WD SmartWare software, makes this drive a smart and secure, travel-friendly storage choice,” said Dale Pistilli, vice president of marketing for WD’s branded products group. “These ultra-portable drives are a stylish and spacious storage solution for consumers to confidently backup, store and carry their entire digital lives.”
WD My Passport Essential hard drives are designed for Windows®-based PCs while WD My Passport for Mac drives are formatted for Mac computers and are compatible with Apple® TimeMachine(TM), Apple’s integrated backup solution. WD SmartWare works on Windows PCs and Mac computers and offers a seamlessly integrated option for Mac users who want an alternative to TimeMachine or Mac OS 10.4 users who don’t have TimeMachine compatibility.
Price and Availability
The new My Passport Essential drives are offered in capacities of 320 GB, 500 GB and 640 GB; My Passport Essential SE drives are offered in capacities of 750 GB and 1 TB. My Passport for Mac drives are available with 320 GB and 500 GB. My Passport Essential and My Passport for Mac drives are available now at select retailers and online at http://www.shopwd.com. Bought My Passport Essential in Finland and the WD SmartWare does not work. WD support informed that the program MAY not work with operating systems with language other than English. Seems so that they are not sure if that's the case! Of course we have operating systems in finnish language here in Finland. Nowhere in WD web-page is said anything about possible language problems nor in the distributors web-page. The software was one of the reasons to select WD product. Well, our market is small:)

I was told by Best Buy the reason. Apparently more power is required. I have two USBs in the front of my PC, they don't have enough power. I decided to plug into an USB in the back panel, and bingo it recognized the new hardware. It just that this WD Essential required that extra power.

To the person in Finland.
Solution:
If you are running any other language in Windows, and you wish to install the default English version of WD SmartWare, you will need to download and install the updated version from the download page.

My problem is solved now. Root cause was a badly fitting USB cable (the mini cable connector had a much too loose fit in the connector of the drive). This resulted in a bad connection and Computer not "seeing" the drive..
I issued an RMA request at the WD support webside and after some weeks (!) finally got a new cable in the mail which is working perfectly !!
Hope this helps..

Hello Sue,
Strange issue with the laptop....
Maybe the WD pulls too much power from the laptop ?
Did you try operating the laptop with the powersupply (so, not on batterypower). That might help..
Just an idea..

Plugged my WD in a couple of weeks ago and thought it was working how it should be but I only save my stuff in "My Book F" and not the WD usb. I think it is because I didn't click cancel when the wizard came up which I have since found out I should have done. Any advice please or have I got to remove the whole thing and start again, I will probably get into a bigger mess if I do that LOL.

My BRAND NEW Passport Essential 640 GB worked ONCE. I set it up and loaded up 300 GB of info. on it and set up the security. Now I can't do anything because when I try to unlock it to use it all the software keeps saying is "unexpected error" and closes. What's up with this? I got a Western Digital because of the good name and it's turning out to be more trouble than it's worth.

This page is supposed to help us but I posted my comment 3 months ago but there are more questions than answers? Where are the WD guys to help or don't they care once we have paid? PC world tech guys talked mr through the set up then tried a different approach and told me mine will never work on either my desktop or laptop except if I plug it in and use like I would a memory stick! Wonderful!

Hi,
I have been using my Western Passport Memory stick for 2 years, on and off it has been working and not working. However its really gave up the ghost. Its to the point, now, that when i have it plugged into my laptop (and college computers) the light is glowing on...but not connecting to my computer or anything. I can feel it "whirring" inside, working, however, i keep cleaing the usb fitting, seeing if its not fitted in properly, but still nothing.
Would be great if someone could tell me if,
1) any other way to see if it works?
2) if i can retrieve my work as i have 2 years of college (VITAL COLLEGE) work on it lol!
Thank you! Answer ASAP!!!! xD

Trying to get My Passport Essentials to open up.
Icon appears in Devices and Printers. Double clicking and right clicking does not produce an "open" option. No icon appears in the Computer window. WD format utility ends up with "Format Failed" Never have attempted to utilize it until after it went out of warranty. WD help not available. Anyone have any ideas?
