Very good honest pro test. Very good camera for amateurs usage, all-in-all. For pros, some questions raised. First, the lens is a bit decentered - sharpness goes to the left. Second - auto WB is not sufficient all around, annoying blue cast is present. CA is much, sometimes, especially around contrast details. Contrast( a bit) and saturation(more) should be raised for JPEG’s. Generally, very good new camera for amateurs! THX for nice informative test!

I wanted to love this camera so badly.  It seemed that there were better cameras in it’s class and even at a lower class for image quality but I needed a compact camera with a non optical viewfinder.  The P7800 fit the bill perfectly with all it’s manual controls, electronic viewfinder, the size and weight, everything except for one thing.  The camera is so new that my mac, Lightroom, nor Photoshop, all updated, can’t see the RAW .nrw files.  The workaround is to download Nikon’s software to get the pics off the camera and then export as either a JPEG, which negates shooting in RAW in the first place, or export to TIFF which I know nothing about.  I got that info from an extensive googling of the issue and it was a post about the original P7000.

I didn’t want to give up on this camera so I called Nikon support.  It was the worst experience I have ever had.  It’s so sad that this part of my experience with the P7800 wasn’t technical at all.  The representative knew nothing about the product.  Didn’t know what RAW was and misspelled NRW three times.  She kept telling me that if the Nikon software works then it’s my issue and she couldn’t help me.  I called again to try my luck with another rep and this time was a little better.  She couldn’t tell me what I assumed about the file format but nicely told me that if the Nikon software worked with the camera then Nikon couldn’t help me.

I just had the same experience with Nikon.  They were completely unhelpful.  I too can not see the the RAW .NRW files.  I was instructed to call the MAC people (I work on a MAC Pro) and ask them about the Codec for the 7800 software. I will try that but I suspect the problem is with Nikon.  I had no problem with the Coolpix 7100 which also produces NRW files.  Are there others out there who are having the same problem?

Nikon keeps coming up with new RAW formats all the time. They seem to have VERY good reasons for doing so, although their competitors have developed a satisfying and stable version ages ago. It takes a while for Adobe to develop the plugin for that *all the time*. Just be patienty for a little while, it’s gonna be alright.
