I’m confused, why is the reviewer annoyed with the camera dropping the resolution for aspect ratios different to the AR of the sensor?
Is he expecting some kind of magic, or does he simply not understand the very basics of optical systems? He is making it sound as if it was a design flaw somehow…

For me, it is just as important to show the full image of the bottom plate of the camera as of the top and any other angle.

Well Roman, they must be using some kind of resizing to keep the uninformed masses happy. There can’t be more “real” information than what the cropped area of the sensor provides. 16:9 means using about 75% of the sensor real state, and thus 75% of its full output resolution, that is, 9mp. The same applies to any other AR.
What those lx must be doing is not only a waste of card space, but intentionally misleading, it seems to me.

Well, the lx3 isnt using the whole sensor in any AR mode. Thats why it can provide the same angle of view and pixel count for the 3 modes. But that also means unused sensor area. Something maybe you can afford in a 1/1.6 sensor, but still a debatable design decision.

Is this a direct replacement for the 230HS?  I was planning on buying the 230HS but now thinking of this.  Looking for a camera for outdoor countryside shots, maybe the odd shot of aircraft at my local airfield. Also interested if the shutter can be set to stay open for 30 secs or so for some night lightning shots.

Great pocket camera, I’m using it to photograph birds with the x12 zoom.  One problem is the camera often refuses to focus on a close-up bird (or spider, or whatever).  Even when the auto-focus frame size is set to Small.  Works well for night lightning on tripod with 15 second max shutter setting.

Touchscreen is big minus for some. However, for me the response was pretty good. It takes a day or two to get used to. The large display sans buttons is awesome. Pictures are crisp and natural, shutter is fast, features are awesome, zoom is plenty. There is sound of motor in video yes. But considering the latest price cut(av. for 180 pounds in India), you can’t ask for more. A must buy.
