Performance

In terms of the variety of edits you can make with the Macphun Filters for Photos app, there’s not a huge amount to choose from. However, considering that this is a free app, it’s well functioned and fun to use.

There’s a good range of different filters, which should suit a variety of different tastes and needs. Some of them are more subtle and, arguably, tasteful than others, while others are a bit more “out there”. All are worth experimenting with to see which you particularly enjoy using.

It’s great how quickly edits and previews are applied to each image, so you can quickly decide if the look is for you or not. Again, given that this is a free app you get a great level of control over how each filter works, especially considering that you can use masks to further edit how the filter is applied.

Of course this app isn’t intended to be a replacement for more sophisticated or advanced editing software, such as Photoshop, or even the amount of editing options available in the Photos app, but it provides a good add on for those tools, or if you just want to quickly change the look of a photo.

Conclusion

MacPhun has a reputation for creating very simple and easy to use software, but that delivers great results. While most of its software is very reasonably priced and offers fantastic value, Filters for Photos goes one further and is completely free - you may as well download it to see if you like what it can do.

Filters like this won’t be to everybody’s tastes. However, if you’re accustomed to using mobile apps such as Instagram, you’ll likely love what is available here. Expanding on the options which are already available in the Photos app is a great way to add a different look to your images.

It’s also great that you can use Macphun Filters for Photos as a standalone app if you like, quickly adding a filter to give a quick change to an image with the minimal of fuss involved. Being able to open your image in other photo editing software with the app integrated into what you already own also makes it very simple and a fluid process.

It’s worth downloading and trying the different filters - and different combinations thereof - to see what appeals to you and what doesn’t. Many will enjoy the subtler options which are available, with final results which look great.
