I bought this model, then I compared against my old Nikon CoolPix P3 (2006). The verdict: My old P3 is much better than my new 5100. The P3 has better colors, is sharpest, better measuring, and much better focus. I don t thing the 5100 is a good choice. I get the mine about 135 euros

After many hours spent comparing cameras, I bought this model and I anm very happy with it. The S5100 takes excellent pictures with spot on metering, it is very compact which was one of my criteria for buying, it is also very easy to use. This is a compact take anywhere and everywhere camera so don’t expect DSLR performance but in its role it is excellent.

I had just bought this model to replace my old little “Olympus Stylus” that only has 3 MP and the very small viewer but never let me down, wether in some Brasilian desert, on a salty beach or out on a damp hike. The pics were consistently clear, colour correct and sharp.
Now I tried this new (to me) camera at different settings and it does not even come close to the picture quality of my old Olympus.

The images are not only NOT sharp, even using flash, but have a bluish tint overall - taken outdoors or inside - which looks to me like flare, maybe cheap plastic lens. Trying to use higher resolution (max 12 MP) even made it worse.

To make a long story short, I returned the cam but not before showing the results to the service manager of the big electronic store I bought it from, and he had to agree that this little Nikon model into which they now squeeze soo many (useful or not)features was not even a match to my many years old Olympus.

I had similar experience with the point and shoot Panasonic Lumix (14 MP) and had to return it as well (but am very happy with the fullsize Lumix with a Leica lens).

I guess many of the newer tiny point & shoot cameras just are not what they used to be. The stores just push and praise all those features, but the cameras just dont deliver.

I have my own S5100 and its been good to me. for the sharpness, it may need some setting so that it will shoot sharper :)

Like John said.. Its not a DSLR .. so don’t expect more :)

THIS CAMERA IS THE BIGGEST PIECE OF GARBAGE I HAVE EVER WASTED MY MONEY ON!!!  There is a 2 second delay from the time I press the shutter release until the shutter trips.  I have had an ongoing exercise in frustration going back and forth with nikon trying to get this resolved.  They keep running around in the same 3 step circle, & don’t have a clue what to do.  THERE IS NO OWNERS MANUAL INCLUDED!!  They do provide a PDF download version that I can print myself.  This will be over 100 8-1/2 X 11 pages printed on one side of the paper.  How am I supposed to stick that in a camera bag???

All in all, I will NEVER AGAIN consider ANY nikon product!!!!!
