DigInfo - www.diginfo.tv Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH1 At Photo Imaging Expo 2009, Panasonic exhibited a digital SLR with interchangeable lenses and Hi-Vision movie capability, called the LUMIX DMC-GH1. The GH1 is compact and lightweight like the G1, with W Live View, which automatically switches between a moveable LCD monitor and live viewfinder. This digital SLR also has Hi-Vision capability, with a user-friendly, advanced Full Auto mode. The GH-1 uses two Hi-Vision recording formats AVCHD, which has high affinity with AV equipment, and Motion JPEG, which has high affinity with PCs. Also, the feature called Omakase iA, where the camera automatically recognizes the subject and sets an optimal exposure and focus, can be used for video as well as still photography. The LUMIX DMC-GH1 is scheduled for release in Japan on April 24, 2009.

Since everybody will uploading Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 videos given it started shipping in the UK 10-June-09, I decided my first test would be something a bit different - slow motion ! One of the many brilliant features of the DMC-GH1 is that it records at 1280x720p at 50 fps (60 fps USA) - as well as 1920x1080x50i so if you want a really smooth progressive frame video all you have to do is render your 1280x720p at 25 fps, as per this video clip. One of the other features I particularily like is the easy to flip round bright LCD display and the eye piece LCD that switches on and switches the main LCD off when you look through it. Then there's the face recognition feature which I have still got to try and when you go to use the slide show feature not only does it pan on image stills but it also plays a fixed music track in background. The noise you can hear is the wind (I overlooked to switch wind filter on) and the seagull calls at half frequency plus the slight juddering was caused by the heavy winds hitting the camera and tripod. If you are about to purchase a Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 do be aware that the memory card is not included and that you need to order an SDHC class-6 or higher (8GB - gives approx 1-hour) and I understand class-10 is about to start shipping soon.

Using parallel filming of images captured by both cameras in default factory setup. Both cameras set to record at 720p avchd mode. Also sequences shot with the GF1 with GH1 lens and vice-versa to distinguish any lens effects. It is interesting that the GF1 image magnification at all focal lengths and with different lenses is greater than that of the GH1, or is it that the GH1 in resolving from 1920 x 1080i Full HD to 1280 x 720p gives a smaller image? Is the GH1 worth the extra £300 for full HD? and a longer zoom lens 14-140mm versus 14-45mm of the GF1. GF1 records only in mono via inbuilt microphone where as the GH1 has an external microphone socket and in stereo. The GH1 features a fantastic electronic viewfinder of amost optical performance where as the GF1 has an accessory EVF of 202K pixels ( not the same resolution as the GH1) and costing an additional £165. More detailed videos to follow exploring the manual settings available during filming.
