While I agree with most of your conclusions about the camera, especially in terms of quality (there’s still not any phone camera out there which is as good as a “decent” compact, regardless of what marketing people tell you) there’s some odd things about this review. You mention a “rear” screen when describing the length of the boot up process and also your product shots show “rear” and “front” of the camera which both appear to have screens. I feel this is very misleading and confusing as the camera only has one screen!

You’re right to say the phone takes a while to boot up from being completely off, but if you’re using it like a phone (and frankly it would be odd if you don’t) it’s usually in standby mode and takes a very short time to power on with a quick press of the button or tap of the screen. You can customise it so a screen swipe will take you direct to the camera app.

Yes, the SD card requires you to take the back off - not a difficult job - but slap in a 32 or 64GB card and it’s unlikely you’ll ever need to touch it again - so I don’t see this being an issue (especially with connectivity of phone allowing you to transfer stuff off the camera automatically (I’ve got mine set up to send all photos to Dropbox whenever I’m in a wifi spot for instance).

A big plus for the Samsung is the removable battery. It’s not true that batteries need to be charged in the phone - there is an official Samsung battery which comes with a neat little USB charger unit and there are numerous after market options. I’ve got three batteries and two chargers now, which means I never get caught out on the move - unlike my iPhone owning friends.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention more about alternative camera apps. One of the great things about smart phones is you’re not stuck with the stock camera app. Options such as FV-5 and Shot Control Pro give more control and even the ability to take photos in an almost RAW-like format.

In addition, you’ve got things like photosphere if you get a S4 with vanilla Android, rather than the crippled Samsung skin (and it’s not hard to sideways install photosphere even if you are suffering the Samsung flavoured Android).

I prefer the old style of a plain telephone but with a good camera. Nothing important to loose. And no interest to be steal.

I have this phone and unfortunately after a few months I started noticing some permanent dust-like specks in the upper area of each image (both video and still images). I cleaned the lens with Tiffen cleaning fluid several times but nothing changed. I think it is caused by microscopic permanent marks on the lens (despite I have always treated it very carefully) due to the fact that the lens is too exposed and not at all recessed. The camera has basically become unusable. I can’t afford to have it checked because Samsung would keep it one to two weeks just to diagnose. Useless Samsung and useless camera.

I bought a samsung galaxy S4 from Best Buy and after 3 months time, the battery just died.  When I called samsung they refused to send me a battery right away and told me that they would send me a packing slip to return the battery which would then get replaced after approximately 2 weeks time.  I asked if they could ship the package priority and sent it by air instead of ground shipping, and they refused.  In the meantime I would not have access to my phone for 2 weeks.  Then I tried to call Best Buy to ask if they could extend the courtesy and assist me by providing me with a loaner battery so that I would not have the hardship of no phone, and Best Buy refused to help.  Pretty much these two companies are not interested in the customer and only have an eye on their profit margins.  I will never buy another samsung phone and will never buy anything at Best Buy again as they don’t deserve my loyalty.

What’s great about the Samsung Galaxy S4 is that it lived up to my expectations. The S4 Samsung retained its user friendly interface, the cool look even though it is made of plastic and the overall great impact it has to its users. Read more details at this article
